    Mine did not and remains as I wish since I did this Mar 7.  Maybe you should repeat the process.

    I Did try it. My entire desktop refreshed into alphabetical order.

    I also wanted the answer to this question - keeping the icons arranged on the desktop but I want it to use my arrangement not auto arrange.

    OMG I think I may have found the answer after reading all the posts here.

    Click on a blank area of the desktop

    Go to view

    Make sure that the" align icons to grid" is NOT checked off.

    so far this is working for me.
