For the record Windows 8 is worse than both Vista and ME.

I've recently got a new computer with Windows 8, I was having trouble with it and decided to refresh to clean up all the bits and pieces I'd added to start again. The windows office package was installed recently by partner before he went away as he bought two licences and it has now gone.
Can I undo the refresh in any way? I have tried and tried but it seems there were no restore points. Very grateful for any advice as have just managed to get some work for first time this year and need word, excel etc.

No restore points = no going back. I don't think that you can go back anyway, certainly there is no easy way.
Your other stuff will have to be re-installed..
If you are going to need Refresh in the future, make a CUSTOM Refresh image that better reflects what is installed and running. The new image is not perfect but better than the default Refresh..

This is similar to the following message in Android ICS:
Reset?
Erase all your settings and desktop apps? You can't reverse this action!
[ Erase Everything ]
i cant believe this - the option of a refresh sounded quite harmless, even it says "without affecting your files", and without realising Microsoft have chosen to rename the term programs to apps, I have lost every "program" I have ever had, including ms office, and every program used for my work. I have lost the functionality of my biometric login... and it seems there are no restore points created before it does this!!! absolutely BS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am so mad right now. What a rotten, misleading thing this "REFRESH" was. I have lost programs and files, and I don't know what to do. Why can't there be a restore like there used to be, where you just went back and picked a date and everything goes back? You have to know SO much to run a pc anymore, it makes me afraid to do anything. I hate Windows 8.
