A process called Service Host: Local System is using up all of my laptops resources

My laptop has been running very slowly for the past few days which is weird because my laptop is quite powerful and has always run very fast. I looked at my task manager and saw that a process called Service Host: Local System was using up almost all of my RAM. I am running Windows 8 Pro on a Sony VAIO S13P. What can I do to fix this problem?

    I have tried all 3 methods several times now, yet the machine is still not running well.  "Service Host: Local System (16)" is consistently sucking up 60% or more of the CPU.  In addition, I cannot successfully run Windows Defender - when started it just continues running without completed an update. 

    Device Information:

    HP Stream [2GB memory; 64-bit OS, x64 based processor: Intel Celeron N2840] running Windows 8.1

    Microsoft Defender; no other security applications; several scans using Defender have been completed

    Machine is up to date on Windows

    Laptop is not running any applications

    Please help!

    Changing my "check for windows updates" to "never" worked! Now I just have to figure out why checking for updates was using up so much CPU.

    I have similar issue using Win 10 with AVG. Stopping AVG does not solve the problem. I've also run the scan to check Win 10 and that's fine - no problems found. I', pretty sure it service host itself. I can hardly bear to use my OPC anymore, I keep borrowing my wife's Win 7 oldie - which speeds along (also has AVG)
