MS UPDATE FAIL causes api-ms-win-downlevel-user32-l1-1-0.dll MISSING

Since windows update ran a couple of days ago (this update inc ie10), I cannot run anything no application will run.

reports the following missing files.

  • api-ms-win-downlevel-user32-l1-1-0.dll
  • api-ms-win-downlevel-ole32-l1-1-0.dll
  • wininet.dll

I have tried restore but this wont work as it says AV is running but i cant shut that down due to missing file errors when i try to run it.

  • sfc /scannow reports no errors
  • win7 disc repair reports that a camera or device is plugged in and wont repair when nothig is plugged in.
  • cant run ms fix it as reports out the missing file error.

All was fine until this ms update ran

Please help I have worked for a client thats needs finishing ASAP.

    I have asked an MS engineer who is responding in another thread about problems with installing IE 10. I asked him to come over and check this thread, to see if he can help us.

    My sympathies, Steve. I hope you are able to recover. 

    I have retreated to an old computer running XP, out of sheer terror. I am afraid to use my Win 7 machine because all the firewalls and antivirus are off; can't turn them back on.

    I am going to search the other Communities to see if a similar conversation is going on & if someone has found a solution. If that fails I will try reinstalling Win 7. Nothing to lose; can't use the computer as it is!

    Problem is, my machine was upgraded to Win 7 from Vista (ugh! And thanks for the Vista experience, MS!). If I reinstall the Win 7 OS, it reports back as being counterfeit and I am days with MS getting that mess straightened out.

    I will let the Community know what happens...

    right so far boys i have managed to resolve the user32 and ole32 dll issues by obtaining them from www.zhaodll.co

    all went well mind but get the right vesion x86 vs x64 etc

    Then i got the api-ms-win-downlevel-shlwapi-l1-1-0.dll issue

    so i tried the same this bombed my machine into a death spiral where i could only just about roll it into cmd mode off advanced recovery etc.

    I tried deleting renaming and moving but with no joy, the only way i got rid off it was to use a stand alone HDD reader using a sata to usb to the laptop (not the main machine) after removing the shlwapi.dll file i am at least back into a limited windows setup and backing up my 300gb before trying the next solution or just reinstalling from the win disc.

    have any of you guys tried to call support about this - I may have too tomorrow.

    Has anyone got another machine running win 7 on and tried to copy the files over manually ?

    Had anyone tried to get the files of the windows disc ? or tried a re installation.

    I have tried to run repair but it bombs as missing files aaaaaarrrrrrgggghhhhhhh
