Since windows update ran a couple of days ago (this update inc ie10), I cannot run anything no application will run.

reports the following missing files.

  • api-ms-win-downlevel-user32-l1-1-0.dll
  • api-ms-win-downlevel-ole32-l1-1-0.dll
  • wininet.dll

I have tried restore but this wont work as it says AV is running but i cant shut that down due to missing file errors when i try to run it.

  • sfc /scannow reports no errors
  • win7 disc repair reports that a camera or device is plugged in and wont repair when nothig is plugged in.
  • cant run ms fix it as reports out the missing file error.

All was fine until this ms update ran

Please help I have worked for a client thats needs finishing ASAP.

Steve

    And my heartfelt thanks to Susan Bradley who held my hand through this whole ordeal and tried her best to intervene with the MS monolith on my behalf. I don't know what I'd have done without her.

    <applause>

    My "permanent fix" and advice to all is, after your system is repaired, just abandon IE and just switch to [an alternate brower]

    With all due respect, let's not forget that your earlier encounter with the Premium [i.e. paid] Support offered via the Answer Desk had a hand in this, too, Dan.

    Hi community,

    I am one of the poor slobs that had to do a repair re-install to finally make this problem go away after more than 2 weeks of of "Tech Support" (NOT!) blunders, do-overs, broken evening call- back appointments, and Tech Support calls to my home during business hours when--surprise!-- I was actually WORKING, not home waiting to hear from them.

    OK, I had to find, then re-install, all my drivers and 3rd party software. And of course I lost Office and had to pay for it again (don't ask!), but at least this agony is now behind me and I didn't have to--and don't WANT to--deal with Tech Support.

    My "permanent fix" and advice to all is, after your system is repaired, just abandon IE and just switch to and stay with Chrome as your browser (or spring for Opera). I do not even open IE anymore, and I certainly don't let it update, even to IE 9. Ditto for my company -provided office computer, I just don't use IE on it (even my employer, a big multinational advertising agency, recommends Firefox as the default browser in their offices worldwide).

    And my heartfelt thanks to Susan Bradley who held my hand through this whole ordeal and tried her best to intervene with the MS monolith on my behalf. I don't know what I'd have done without her.

    REPOSTING:

    For home users, no-charge support for security updates (only!) is available by calling 800-MICROSOFT (800-642-7676) in the US or 877-568-2495 in Canada. [1] [2]

    For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary [i.e., in other regions] for support issues relating to security updates, visit the following Microsoft International Support website: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx?rdpath=4

    In the near future (one assumes), Microsoft should begin offering home users (only!) no-charge support for IE10 install and uninstall issues.  [You also may be eligible for the support if an IE10-related issue causes your computer to crash or if IE10 does not let you browse all sites.]  For now, however, you're on your own - so your best bet is to hide IE10 (and KB2670838 IMHO) & stick with IE9 for the time being.

    =================================================

    [1] Monday through Friday, 5:00 AM - 9:00 PM Pacific Time; Saturday and Sunday, 6:00 AM – 3:00 PM Pacific Time

    [2] Neither Internet Explorer 10 nor KB2670838 is a security-related update!

    Bullpucky.  Call 1-800-Microsoft and state that you got nailed with this IE10 release.

    If you STILL cannot get a support case, email me at susan-at-msmvps.com (change the -at- to @) and I'll get one set up for you.

    The bad news is you are facing a possible repair reinstall.

    Just spent the better part of 90 minutes dealing with tech support (not) and being told it would cost me 99.  to repair my computer since a system restore to early March did not work to fix a universal ole32 dll issue in windows 7.  According  to the tech, it is clearly (in her view) my computer at fault.  THANKS MICROSOFT>  I will keep your support in mind  during our next  purchase.
