Disable creation of desktop.ini files in Windows 8

Hi Pablo,

I would like you to inform that Desktop.ini is a system file which deals with common folders such as Downloads, Documents, Pictures, and Music etc. When a change is made in these folders, Desktop.ini is updated.

Removing the file will cause issues with the Operating System and so it is not recommended to remove the files. The desktop.ini file by default has the System, Hidden and Read-only attributes assigned.

If you want to stop these messages, go to Folder Options through Search click settings and you will see Folder Options, click it and the View tab and scroll until you see " Hide protected operation system files (recommended) and put a check in the box.

I don't know about them but it helped me immensely.  I knew from past experience not to delete it but didn't know how to hide it.  Thank you very much.

I keep reading crap like this and have to chime in. 

Why do people want to answer questions when they have no clue what they are talking about?

Why do people evade a direct question, in this case how do i stop the useless creation of desktop.ini

and also leave my system files visible? 

I see all kinds of useless posts in this thread that dont work and also are wrong and misleading.

I just get fed up with searching google for a quick fix and having to read through post after post where the

question is perfectly phrased and a bunch of boneheads post useless answers. 

To any and all people who feel inclined to answer a technical post and dont have a good answer.

1. Read the original question and if you have to take out an old school pencil and paper and write down the 

pertinent information regarding the nature of the question.

2. Make sure your answer is concise and usable by the major public and correct
3. Make sure you have answered the question and not dancing around the issue making it look like you know something.

For anyone who wants to prove the statements about desktop.ini, go ahead and delete it and you will see essentially nothing happens. Why the F Microsoft insists on allowing annoying things like this into their operating system is beyond me. I'm sure there is a better way to do this. 

All I want, for my own peice of mind is how to quickly and accurately STOP the creation of files that are useless as desktop.ini. For anyone who has taken the time to read this rant, dont download anyone home made fixer tools, they are probably full of malicious code. 

Dont freak out when making a registry change, Microsoft used to issue such strong warnings about messing with the registry if you are not Microsoft certified.. More crap.. Just keep track of what you did and back it out if you find it to be causing issues.. Granted some registry changes can cause major havoc and system crashes.. but not as many as one would think. I feel that if the registry key has a name that looks ominous.. dont mess with it.

So much nonsense out here it just pisz me off to read such crap. I feel sorry for non techies trying to figure this stuff out.

I can't help but note the following two points.

1.  For the most part, desktop.ini files CAN be removed with no ill effects; I regularly clean them out of the folders in my start menu hierarchy with no ill effects.  Cleaning it out of Downloads causes the custom icon to be removed, and no other problems.  So, contrary to the party rhetoric coming out of Microsoft, these are not essential, and can safely be deleted.

2.  They represent a monumental step backwards on the part of Microsoft.  I've been in the business long enough to remember the transition from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95.  One of the big selling points of Windows 95 was that it had this wondrous thing called the registry that provided an alternative to per-application ini files clogging up your system.  Yet here we are over 20 years later, and Windows Explorer is STILL dropping ini files all over our systems.  You'd think that by now, Microsoft would have upgraded Windows Explorer to be a little less Windows 3.1'ish, and a bit more Windows 10'ish, meaning it would put this information in the registry.
