what is masetupcleaner.exe

I am investigating this right now. I received a warning from COMODO that this new program was trying to access the internet. I then found a forum that mentioned this program, MASetupCleaner.exe, is a part of the Samsung media package. I had just installed this package to allow connection of a Samsung Galaxy cellphone to the computer.

I will post more when I know more. Right now, I suspect that this is a safe program. I do not yet know its purpose. It can't be bad to have a clean setup :-)

I have also installed Samsung KEIS and drivers for Samsung Galaxy Note 2.  Did so on a Windows 8 and also Windows 7 System.  Both systems have MASetupCleaner.EXE in the Windows/SYSWOW64 Folder.  I have another Windows 8 system with very little installed.  I will install packages on that system until I see the culprit.

This would not bother me except every once in a while after a power up I get a message asking me to take action on MASetupCleaner I have always declined.  When I see it again I will try an be more specific.

I am suspicious of the Samsung KEIS software.  It does not behave very well.  It takes several attempts to connect successfully and If I leave my phone connected for several hours I get a screen asking me to ACTIVATE Windows.  I have seen this mentioned by others.

I also have had calls saying my computer was trying to access the Internet, but I blew the guys off (not very nicely either) as pranksters or hackers.  They identified themselves as Microsoft Support, but they had foreign accents and were not very believable.

I'm sure you know that many, many programs on your machine are accessing the internet all of the time. I have to assume your firewall is alerting you to a new program that is trying to do so: MASetupCleaner.exe. I have told the COMODO firewall to block this program's access to the internet until I know what it does.

I don't really suspect the Kies software of doing sneaky things, but I do find it to be an extremely poor program. It was a nightmare to install it on both of my Win7 SP1 machines (one AMD, one Intel). Connections to the Samsung Galaxy phone are painful and iffy. The phone belongs to my partner. If I had known how much trouble Kies would cause, I would have told him not to buy this new phone 2 weeks ago. It never occurred to me that connection to a PC would be a problem, because his older Nokia 5800 phone connected so easily. Its software installed simply and worked. Meanwhile, Kies has stopped connecting altogether on one of my Win7 machines.

Meanwhile, I still do not know what MASetupCleaner.exe does. If you find out, please post here ... as will I.

I just installed the Kies package (Kies_2.5.0.12114_1_17.exe) downloaded from Samsung last week.  I installed it on a Windows 8 system that was clean.  There was no MASetupCleaner.EXE on the system.

After completing the Kies installation MASetupCleaner.EXE did show up in the Windows/WOW64 folder.  It had a date of 11/28/2012.  There were several other programs that were also installed in that folder with the same date.  I did a system restart at this time and rechecked.  They were still there.

Next using the control panel, I performed an uninstall of Kies hoping to see that the programs that Kies installed were gone.  No such luck, they are still there.

I then did another restart which resulted in a message that sais "do you want this program to make changes to your system"  Yes or No.  while getting a pen and pencil the message went away.

I then did another restart which failed and required a second try which worked.

Bottom line, I believe this Keis software is a problem and should not be installed.  I will call Samsung on Monday to find out more.  The Software that is the problem is created by MarkAny Inc.  Info can be found by right clicking on the properties of related files and looking at the details.

I updated Windows Vista to Windows 8. Then I installed Keis software which did not work in Windows 8. I uninstalled Kies software and now every time I turn on or restart my computer pops up a window asking if I wish to run MaSetupCleaner.exe? I think this is not normal. What can I do to eliminate this? What can happen if MaSetupCleaner.exe runs? Did you call to Toshiba? What they said?
