scroll bar/slide bar disappears after a few seconds very anoying

I am going to use this as a biotch board and tell MS that this slider is just nuts pint period. Now the damn thing cannot be used to scroll down because in windows 8.1 it hides behind the bottom tool bar wtf already. MS is in attempt to screw with the damn thing in order we click and click and click. Pull your head out of your collective arses and design a browser and os that will be user friendly, if not then we will leave your collective skank arses.

I've got the same problem...you me and millions of other users of Windows 8/8.1 but do they give a damn? Well if they did, they'd have fixed it already! It doesn't happen on my Firefox browser but nearly everywhere else I get the disappearing scrollbar pointer and then there's the stupid pop out charms that mostly pop out when I don't want them and they don't always go away when I move the cursor away. Sometimes they lock on and I have to move the cursor away and click somewhere else to get rid.

On top of that there's the bottom toolbar popping up and locking me out of the bottom scroll bar pointer. Again, I have to move the cursor away and click to get rid before continuing...until the next time it happens...grrr!

Why have a scrollbar that disappears and leads you to have to constantly take your eyes off what your doing, look down and move the cursor away, then back on to the pointer to continue scrolling?!

I try to keep clicking so that the cursor doesnt disappear but often the page moves quicker than I can comfortably read it...so back to taking my eyes off what im reading, looking down to the vanished pointer, moving the cursor away and back on to it again...and again...and again!

Surely even a team of Microsoft designers could see how frustrating this experience was going to be for their users.

Another problem is that the mouse pad on my Toshiba laptop has a swipe feature that can't be turned off (don't manufacturers read forums to see the problems were having before designing for Windows 8?) so if I move the cursor from right to left and my finger is too close to the edge (remember i'm looking at what im doing not at the mousepad, designers) then out comes good old solid charm bar and utterly pointless clock! Again I have to move my cursor away and click somewhere blank to get rid of it before I can go back to what I was doing.

Instead of being helpful, it's incredibly frustrating. I'm just an uneducated street cleaner and I reckon I could have done a better job than all those certified geniuses who mangled and molested this OS.

Solution:

If you don't want to give your users the option of just turning off the charm bar and then using Windows key + C or a dedicated icon to bring it up (too easy?) then why not put the charm bar on the left where it wont cause as many problems with the scroll bar pointers, which are usually on the right...then I could take the option of disabling the other pop ups (which usually reside on the left but would now be on the right)...as I already have, and that would be the end of (at least some of) my problems...or why not lock the bottom toolbar and have the charms pop up from there.

No more being locked out of scrolling by a pop up toolbar and no more constant false pop ups of the charm bar...simples :)

The just giving your users the ability to switch off the pop out charm bar + stupid pointless clock,  except by using a dedicated icon, is by far the simplest and best solution for those who don't (and don't want to) have any form of touchscreen on a laptop or desktop.

You my friend said it all. I feel the same way as you about your points. What was really frustrating to me is when windows 8 first rolled out it seemed new and interesting until I did not keep up with the update after update and rendered my laptop unusable. Well after getting through that mess on my own (thought I had a virus) I got the os running well enough to be productive and now it is just learning to navigate through all of the changes, in addition, deal with all of foregoing idiosyncrasies you spelled out (in good detail may I add). In closing, I am very suspect of the design of 8 running ie11 due the potential of miss click and hitting on adds all over the screen. To me this is problematic and should not be acceptable with MS and their software design.****

Exactly!  I also find it maddening that the "helpers" answer the question with a question, asking for more information, before they can provide the answer.  How stupid are these help personnel any way?  Use your windows 8 computer for more than 10 minutes, man, and you won't have to ask us what we're talking about! 

Yea they know whats going on, its so obvious that it was a joke reply from a joke company that instead of listening and making the improvements that its frustrated customers want, just treats us with contempt.

Seems to me that theyre trying to catch up with Apple and Android operating systems, which are far superior and trying to develop an OS thats all things to all men (and women), instead of developing a seperate system for portable devices and keeping one for desktops and non touch screen devices (Windows 7?).

You can almost feel the arrogance...this is our strategy...were doing it our way and screw opinon!

So whats the alternative?

Like a lot of people I cant afford to pay a premium for Apple so Ill be upgrading my old XP desktop to windows 7... wether Microsoft like it or not and using that but mostly using my ANDROID tablet, which is so much easier and less frustrating than Windows 8.1. As for this Windows 8.1 laptop ive just bought, Ill keep learning it and putting up with the operating systems failings for now. To be honest it wouldnt be that bad if they made the improvements their customer want but I wont hold my breath.

It will end up spending most of its time closed and sidelined. Hopefully that will be the fate for Windows 8.1 until they make the improvements their customers want.

I believe it is intentional. While perusing content that requires the use of the vertical toolbar, one ends up clicking on the ADVERTISEMENT in the position previously occupied by the scrollbar, thus SELECTING and OPENING nuisance ads.  No doubt this is a bow by MS (and likely a perk that cost advertisers more for that sweet spot on our desktop) to Google other search engines that get a nickel for each time we click that ad.
