nsi memory leaks fixed yet?

Here is the NSI process after 2 days UP TIME.

I have Windows Update set to NOTIFY ME when updates are available, NOT DOWNLOAD and NOTIFY, or DOWNLOAD and INSTALL. This way I can assure my system does not reboot while trying to monitor this. Also, this was AFTER installing MS Office, and all it's updates through Windows Update.

Feel like I am chasing a ghost at this point. My memory usage is minimal, goes up during updates, but settles back around 1.4GB of 8GB available at idle. NO strange spikes, no strange processes draining anything. Granted, this is a whole new computer, SAME OS, and SAME network connection.

All I can say to those affected... As much as it sucks... TRY a fresh install. That is what I am on with this new build, and no issues so far. Granted, like others, the problem may pop up after 16 days of up time, I will monitor and let you all know. Still have IE 9 active, IE 10 and IE 11 HIDDEN from the update list. ONCE I get 16 days CLEAN, I will update to IE 11.

Well... All I can say, is with Windows Update disabled for the last 15 days on my old system, did not seem to help my system at all. The NSI service still jumped around a lot, and used more RAM than other peoples systems.

This is with an Intel Core2Quad Q9650-ASUS P5QL/EPU Mobo-4GB DDR2 Mushkin Gaming RAM-nVidia GTX 570-650w ANTEC Green PSU. Windows Auto Update DISABLED.

Now, I have built my NEW system: Intel Core i5 4670K Haswell - MSI Z87-GD65 Gaming Series Mobo - 8GB DDR3 G-Skill 2133mhz RAM - EVGA 650w Gaming Modular PSU. Windows Update ENABLED.

After Boot:

After 16HRS Up, and a Windows Auto Update run (Defender Definitions only):

As you can see usage is WAY lower even at boot, as my old system at boot was between 3000 and 4000 K, and increased from there. Here on the new system, I have a DROP since boot. Keep in mind this is a FRESH Win 7 install, SAME Home Premium 64bit OS as last system, and IE9 is still active. IE10 and 11 are the ONLY updates NOT applied since installing the OS. ALL my drivers are up to date, all other Windows updates are up to date. Yes, only 16 hours monitored, however, I just got my system stable after overclocking, and just now separated the NSI service out into it's own SVCHOST process.

I will continue to capture images as time progresses, now that my system is stable, I should not have to do any restarts, and start over on the uptime timer. I am hoping to gather results over the next 15 days without restarting the PC, only then can I really judge the difference.

OH, probably good to mention as well, the PC is connected to the same ASUS router that is connected to the same 2Wire DSL modem for my ISP. So I do not suspect routers being an issue.

I will keep looking, and trying to find a solution.

Right now I am trying with Auto Update disabled for Microsoft Update. See how that goes for the next 15 days or so, then I will be trying a FRESH install of Windows 7, be on an entire new PC build as well. The new PC is going to be an Intel i5 on a gaming board, with completely different RAM. Be posting those results by the end of the month.

Alright after about a year trying to fix this I can confirm that the problem is related Windows Update. I don't know how, nor do I have screenshots, as this was all done in an intoxicated stupor. I seem to remember disabling either System Event Notification Service or COM+ Event System. Lo and behold a few days later our svchost controlling nsi (and coincidently both services mentioned above, although whichever I had disabled was absent from the list obviously) was playing nice with my RAM and I only saw minimal use.

Now, there is a drawback to this workaround (I'm mainly sharing this story in hopes it points someone to an ACTUAL solution) Windows Update will not update at all... period. When manually activated it searches for updates, finds them, says its installing and then it will say something along the lines "Windows installed updates unsuccessfully"

Everything else would work fine though, online gaming, email, LAN, the works. I'm eager to see what you've found out Jasthrus, as I feel we're getting close to the root of all this nonsense.

I hope this helps someone.

Final Note: I obviously re-enabled everything as not being able to update windows is an awfully large security risk.

Update;

I now have had my desktop running for 16 days.  NSI topped out at 250K and hovers between 218K - 230K.  Something must have been added to the last set of patches from MS.  The other software I updated was FF, Chrome, Flash, Java, etc... all the standard software that needs monthly patching.

BTW:  I have IE11 installed.

I have removed all version of IE from my system, yet the problem still occurs, so I don't believe it to be related to IE.

Just FYI, you can't remove Internet Explorer, because it's an integral part of the operating system. You can remove all the updates and remove access to the browser, but you can't get rid of it altogether. So you still can't say whether IE's involved in the problem or not.

Okay, what I meant was I've uninstalled Internet Explorer and updates from 'Programs and Features' and also turned off IE from within 'Windows features'.

I thought I had uninstalled all these IE zombies too - which had fixed the problem on two of my three desktops with the memory leak problem. The third machine continued with the NSI leak - then I discovered that when I had uninstalled IE11, windows automatically reinstalls IE10. So I uninstalled IE10, and IE9 magically appeared installed.... Anyway, go through the ControlPanel->Programs->ProgramsAndFeatures->InstalledUpdates and remove those nasty IE zombies - and keep blowing them away in the uninstaller - they come back to life as an earlier version of the undead!
