I have windows 7 sttarter  ... and my weather gadget become unable to run and

tell me "cannot connect to service"

Have you checked whether your Internet Explorer is not set to Work Offline.

Update:

Microsoft has DISABLED the weather and currency gadgets via a recent Security Update, due to concerns over the vulnerability associated with these gadgets running on your computer. You can read more about it here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2719662 . Adjusting your computer's settings and all these other "suggestions" people are making, will NOT work. The function has been REMOVED from the operating system. It has also been removed from the Windows 8 operating system. There are "theorists" that either agree that there is a security issue within the gadgets or Microsoft just does not want to support gadgets (usually third party software) and thus, has disabled them in Windows 7 and eliminated them in Windows 8.

Thanks to DaveNYC for the Info. Spread the word because many people are facing this problem just like you.

My reward for messing around with the system date is that now all of my Windows Updates are coming in with the 2017! year. Never again. I had immediately returned the system date back to current but every Windows Update comes in with the 2017 year. Do not know how to fix this.

My god ... HOW can the Win Updates be '2017'?  When no such updates even exists ... we're at 2015 now.

Explain!

HOW and WHERE do you see the year 2017 on the Updates?

Start Win Update, click 'View Update History' on the left side, read the dates in the 'Date installed' column.

(Click ON the 'Date installed' column to sort by date, click several times to chose ascending or descending).

IF your computer/system time is set to todays date, then what you're saying is simply impossible, you're looking somewhere else, or you're intoxicated; by joy, some fumes or Equal ...

    We've mentioned this previously in this thread,  but it may have got lost in all the posts.

    There is a an MSN Weather gadget which is exactly the same as the Windows 7 weather gadget, in all respects, and more, and it's stable.   It has exactly the same icon.  In addition, it will expand out to reveal a 5 day forecast by just clicking on the icon.

    I have to disagree.  My friend lives in Mississippi.  She has the problem that you are discussing with the weather gadget not connecting to service.   I am looking for answers to help her get hers back.

    I, however, live in Memphis, TN and I have the weather gadget on my desktop and it is working just fine. 

    I keep the updates run on my computer.  I can't believe the problem is one that Microsoft has stopped the gadget from working - since it still works fine for me.

    Would love to hear from anyone that might know the real reason the weather gadget is not working.

    Does the Currency Gadget work for you?

    I have 3 pcs. The problem is only on one PC now. I use multiple websites which auto update. The other PCs don't use one of the websites.

    The problem is not that the code for the Gadgets does not work, the problem is that MS has made updates to Win7 and to MSIE 11.  DPI appears to be central to the problem.  It's hard to create a single scenario that always crashes the Weather Gadget, because, it seems to take time for Weather updates to stop (crash) getting data.  It seems that some external web sites auto-update once or more times a minute, thus eventually cause Weather Gadget's update from happening.  When it crashes it does not self start. The simple solution of updating the config.xml file with a current date, acts like pressing a restart button. 

    So, it makes perfect sense that you may never run across the problem. One of my PC has not. 

    Essentially, they aren't broken. Most gadgets do not require outside data. They're fine, unless someone has a problem with missing files.  Currency requires data from MS.  Weather does a regular update for temp data for the selected city.  MS' decision to not support gadgets is due to a security issue. So, that does not mean they won't work, but MS won't fix quirks when they're discovered.

    There are other programs. How well are they tested to not have a hook into your PC or their own security issue for hackers? Do you trust your tax data, bank data, other personal data won't be compromised?

    Look at the origin of their websites.
