Have you checked whether your Internet Explorer is not set to Work Offline.

Update:

Microsoft has DISABLED the weather and currency gadgets via a recent Security Update, due to concerns over the vulnerability associated with these gadgets running on your computer. You can read more about it here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2719662 . Adjusting your computer's settings and all these other "suggestions" people are making, will NOT work. The function has been REMOVED from the operating system. It has also been removed from the Windows 8 operating system. There are "theorists" that either agree that there is a security issue within the gadgets or Microsoft just does not want to support gadgets (usually third party software) and thus, has disabled them in Windows 7 and eliminated them in Windows 8.

Thanks to DaveNYC for the Info. Spread the word because many people are facing this problem just like you.

My reward for messing around with the system date is that now all of my Windows Updates are coming in with the 2017! year. Never again. I had immediately returned the system date back to current but every Windows Update comes in with the 2017 year. Do not know how to fix this.

My god ... HOW can the Win Updates be '2017'?  When no such updates even exists ... we're at 2015 now.

Explain!

HOW and WHERE do you see the year 2017 on the Updates?

Start Win Update, click 'View Update History' on the left side, read the dates in the 'Date installed' column.

(Click ON the 'Date installed' column to sort by date, click several times to chose ascending or descending).

IF your computer/system time is set to todays date, then what you're saying is simply impossible, you're looking somewhere else, or you're intoxicated; by joy, some fumes or Equal ...

    Don't be so quick to doubt an honest reporter. There are four (4) more just like the above two. I said that I had BRIEFLY, MOMENTARILY changed the system date to 2017 to follow another individuals solution [from this Micosoft Community site] re the Windows 7 Weather Gadget. I plan to see a pro when I have the time. Right now, it's not causing any havoc.

    When I restored my system to an earlier date, the Weather Gadget now works, but the Updates continue to come in at 2017!

    Checking out of this thread. The chat is getting a bit too rough for me...

    I checked mine, My recent updates are all dated on the appropriate date in 2015.  I use a future date for Config.xml, like you have, In my case, I use 2020 and make it read only, but that should not matter. The reason for asking you if your system date is current, was not to question your actions, but to verify that your system date did not revert to 2017 for some reason when the update took place.  In either case, there's no attempt to be rough, but to help understand the cause of the updates showing a 2017 date. When Windows downloads an update and applies it, it "should" use the system date.  I have seen situations where the visible system date is not seen by some software and the time or date differs. I do not know why MS doesn't make all of this more transparent, but it seems everything goes through numerous pieces of separate code. I suspect something got forward dated, which should not have happened, but it apparently did happen at no action or cause by you.  It just did out of issues with the complexities of overly complex Win7 (all part of why hackers find numerous paths to harm people).  I've yet to find out why some apps don't see my current system date.  I have one software provider who thinks I'm nuts because their software continually shows me at GMT, which they claim is not possible.  MS simply proves to us all, every day, that what should be is not always what is.

    I am able to use the 'Select current location' search option again for no apparent reason after first noticing the weather gadget would only return 'Location not found' for the last few days.

    I performed no updates, no system restores, and installed nothing new;  I have done nothing at all with the gadget cache folders and files from the time the location search option was confirmed not working a few days ago, until now, as indeed the location search option seems to work fine again.

    I noticed that during the time the weather gadget would not search via the "Select current location" option, my location associated with established instances of the weather gadgets remained correct but could not be changed.  A new weather gadget instance connected as the default Canadian city, Ottawa, but the location could also not be changed via the 'Select current location' search option, returning only 'Location not found'.

    I also noticed that when the 'Select current location' search option was not working the location format on the gadget was listed as "City, Canada", where as now with the 'Select current location' service working again, the location listed on the gadget has abbreviated the country as "City, CAN".

    I can not say why the 'Select current location' search is working again for me.  I just simply noticed the country was again being abbreviated for my gadget location (as it used to when the location service was working previously) so I though I would check, and indeed it will search locations again under options (at this time).

    I tested as well.  I opened "Gadgets" from the desktop (right click) and added an additional (for me the 5th) Weather Gadget.  I entered a city other than New York and it was found right away. 

    Apparently, the cause for search to stop working at MS, is now working again.
