Have you checked whether your Internet Explorer is not set to Work Offline.

Update:

Microsoft has DISABLED the weather and currency gadgets via a recent Security Update, due to concerns over the vulnerability associated with these gadgets running on your computer. You can read more about it here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2719662 . Adjusting your computer's settings and all these other "suggestions" people are making, will NOT work. The function has been REMOVED from the operating system. It has also been removed from the Windows 8 operating system. There are "theorists" that either agree that there is a security issue within the gadgets or Microsoft just does not want to support gadgets (usually third party software) and thus, has disabled them in Windows 7 and eliminated them in Windows 8.

Thanks to DaveNYC for the Info. Spread the word because many people are facing this problem just like you.

My reward for messing around with the system date is that now all of my Windows Updates are coming in with the 2017! year. Never again. I had immediately returned the system date back to current but every Windows Update comes in with the 2017 year. Do not know how to fix this.

My god ... HOW can the Win Updates be '2017'?  When no such updates even exists ... we're at 2015 now.

Explain!

HOW and WHERE do you see the year 2017 on the Updates?

Start Win Update, click 'View Update History' on the left side, read the dates in the 'Date installed' column.

(Click ON the 'Date installed' column to sort by date, click several times to chose ascending or descending).

IF your computer/system time is set to todays date, then what you're saying is simply impossible, you're looking somewhere else, or you're intoxicated; by joy, some fumes or Equal ...

Well I went and did it and tried to mess around with the gadget.  Now I am stuck on New York and no other location can be found.  Tried numerous "fixes" but nothing works.  Oh well should have left well enough alone.

I guess I have to take back what I said a few posts ago.  My weather gadget will not find any other location but is working fine for my location.  I did the "2017 fix" so it must be related to that. When I did the "resave Config.xml fix" I am sure it would find any location.  I am tempted to do some experimenting but since it works for my location I won't push it.

I wonder if AndersWilhelmsson is seeing the same issue.

With my Weather Gadget, I first started seeing connection problems in February 2015.  Shortly after, I found simply re-saving the config.xml would fix all my problems, as is widely suggested.

I have not had the general connection problem since last re-saving my config.xml file to 2017 and setting the file properties to read-only over a month ago.

Recently, as others have also noted (To a T), there seems to be an internal problem with the 'select current location' options tool.

As for me, my location has not changed and is correct and connects as normal to the weather msn.com source with weather data for my area, updating the gadget every 30 min or so.

But, since reading similar posts, I decided to see if I can still search or change the location just for fun.

    I can not.

My location is seemingly stuck to my current location, which is correct (for now), but can not be changed...  Please note, this location is not the default Canadian location, which seems to be Ottawa, Canada in my experience.

I am getting 'Location not found' when trying to search for major Canadian locations like Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, etc..  This worked fine after last saving the config.xml in the future and setting to read-only.

It seems this layer of the gadget has now failed for me also.  I am not sure if this is due to ongoing Windows Updates or by some other error introduced by workarounds ie. 'protecting'/'unprotected' cache file(s) via read-only, etc. ...

I did make a backup of the cache folders almost a month ago (when there was no connection or location search problems), but have not attempted restoring/overwriting these files at this time...

So as things are now, the location is correct and I do not need to change it, although it would seem I no longer can if I wanted/needed to using the gadget's options 'select current location' search.

    Regards.
