Was having this same problem and I fixed it. Check to make sure it's actually not waking! In my case the computer itself was waking but the display adapter was not. I could hear the processor fan come back on, the hard drives spin up, but nothing on my screen. In my BIOS, there was an option to not let the integrated graphics adapter sleep. It was called "RC6 Render Standby" and I turned it off -- fixed!
windows 8 won't wake up from sleep mode
I have a Dell desktop with Windows 8 and it will wake up from sleep mode if not in use for awhile but if left for longer periods it goes into sleep mode and will not wake up. I have tried to wake it
- touching mouse
- touching power button
- using windows key + C
- no results unless I do a hard power down
Now it has started to download windows updates without installing them
The best I saved for last...it will not shut down it only goes into Power Save mode
very frustrating...suggestions please?

2014-01-20T17:46:12+00:00 Same problem here with no fixes helping, and reading all the replies doesn't give me much hope. Just one of several quirks with my new computer that I hate. So why is Windows solution to release Windows 9? How about fixing 8 for those of us stuck with it, or giving us all 9 for free. Very frustrating cycle with this company.

2014-01-26T14:56:00+00:00 I have a new HP Envy6 and have been experiencing the same issue. Took my computer back to Geek Squad and they did a complete restore of the PC and the issue still persists. They did a hardware performance check and said it had to be Windows 8. Hopefully they will push an update to correct this issue soon.
I have the new HP Envy 3rd gen I7 desktop. It had this problem.
Fixed it by upgrading every driver from motherboard, Intel, hard disk controller.....
Then, when updated to Windows 8.1 - the problem came back.
Started a new discussion on this website for Windows 8.1.

2014-01-31T05:24:23+00:00 I just posted an blog on this issue here: http://codeslayer2010.wordpress.com/2014/01/31/windows-8-wont-wake-up-from-sleep-mode-power-off-goes-into-sleep-mode-after-bios-update/
The higlights of my situation are:
HP Pavilion 17 " Laptop
I3 processor
- It does not help to upgrade to Windows 8.1
- No Windows Update has fixed this issue
- The problem seemed to start about 2 months after I bought the laptop, after a BIOS update (update must have been around October 2013).
- Tech support was not able to fix it, even after trying different driver configurations and a BIOS rollback.
I hope this has added useful information to the conversation, and at the very least, adds one more voice to the chorus calling for a solution.
