windows 8 won't wake up from sleep mode

I have a Dell desktop with Windows 8 and it will wake up from sleep mode if not in use for awhile but if left for longer periods it goes into sleep mode and will not wake up. I have tried to wake it

  • touching mouse
  • touching power button
  • using windows key + C
  • no results unless I do a hard power down

Now it has started to download windows updates without installing them

The best I saved for last...it will not shut down it only goes into Power Save mode

very frustrating...suggestions please?

Was having this same problem and I fixed it.  Check to make sure it's actually not waking!  In my case the computer itself was waking but the display adapter was not.  I could hear the processor fan come back on, the hard drives spin up, but nothing on my screen.  In my BIOS, there was an option to not let the integrated graphics adapter sleep.  It was called "RC6 Render Standby" and I turned it off -- fixed!

    Another underlying issue is that now you don't know if any of the power/performance settings are truly working as the user specifies. I'm even more suspicious as when I go to view my supposedly "Custom" power setting, It doesn't list specifically what I set, merely what I named it. Microsoft - I can barely understand the fact that there's no fix to this issue. But even sadder is no response to the problem! I just scrolled up to see if this page was on an official Microsoft site. Next step is Twitter and #whywin8sucks time.

    I talked with Microsoft Support and was told this is a Windows 8.1 issue that they are working on.  I was also told there should be new updates by January 10 to fix the problem.  Hopefully this is true.  They did help me set  up the computer to hibernate because I can wake it up from hibernate.  I am only having a problem with sleep mode.  You might try that until the problem is resolved.

    Fixed the problem on my HP Envy Desktop.

    Not only was sleep a problem, Windows would just nod out with no activity on the Task Manager.

    Typing would just stop sometimes and other delays for no reason.

    Upgraded to Windows 8.1

    On HP, look at the maintenance hardware.

    Upgraded the ROM Bios, Intel firmware,  the Motherboard firmware, the hard disk firmware, and virtually all of the internal system drivers. It is as if Windows 8.1 spawned a whole set of firmware updates.

    Then Windows Update suddenly had new drivers available too.

    Then, the sleep problem went away. Have been letting it sleep and come back on for 4 weeks now.

    This was a real pain to take care of, but worth it.

    My best guess is that the hardware providers never really tested the firmware until Windows 8.1 came out.

    Well I guess we will just have to hope and pray that the January 10th update takes care of this widespread issue in 8.1
