Was having this same problem and I fixed it. Check to make sure it's actually not waking! In my case the computer itself was waking but the display adapter was not. I could hear the processor fan come back on, the hard drives spin up, but nothing on my screen. In my BIOS, there was an option to not let the integrated graphics adapter sleep. It was called "RC6 Render Standby" and I turned it off -- fixed!
windows 8 won't wake up from sleep mode
I have a Dell desktop with Windows 8 and it will wake up from sleep mode if not in use for awhile but if left for longer periods it goes into sleep mode and will not wake up. I have tried to wake it
- touching mouse
- touching power button
- using windows key + C
- no results unless I do a hard power down
Now it has started to download windows updates without installing them
The best I saved for last...it will not shut down it only goes into Power Save mode
very frustrating...suggestions please?

2013-07-09T22:43:29+00:00 I have a new ASUS 1735 series as of 6/12/2013 with Windows 8. I frequently put it in sleep mode when I'm going to be away for awhile during the day. Overnight, I always power down. On seven occasions when it's been in sleep mode, NOTHING I do will wake it up. I have had to pull the plug, wait, re-plug and push the "on" button. Sometimes it goes directly to where I left off, sometimes it requires a log-on.
That process has always left an event on my Control Panel - System Reliability History. "Windows not shut down properly." I have discovered no pattern to when this happens other than it happening two days in a row, twice, at least a week apart. From the number of similar complaints, this is obviously a Windows 8 issue that needs fixing.

2013-06-27T04:29:24+00:00 I had similar problems after updating my bios. Before that everything worked fine and my pc would sleep in a couple of seconds and almost instantly wake up back in the login screen.
So I went looking for clues which could solve it. For me I think certain hardware (my gpu) doesn't work well with all powerstates (ref: http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?t=354552). I have a 5 yr old machine so I tried to manually force it not to enter S5 or S6 powerstates.
What I did was change the bios suspend settings from auto to S3 only (and also some other suspend settings in the cpu area). Try fidling a bit with it untill it works for you.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

2013-06-12T12:08:44+00:00 Ibid. ASUS CM1745 Windows 8 update. Logging this from my iPhone while waiting for the automatic Updating You system to finish...10-min now and only 14%. Machine will wake from light sleep, but Hal seems to take over if its in deep sleep. Stinks but I can't do this every morning so I will disable sleep mode and burn a few more trees.
