I have a Dell desktop with Windows 8 and it will wake up from sleep mode if not in use for awhile but if left for longer periods it goes into sleep mode and will not wake up. I have tried to wake it touching mouse touching power button using windows key + C no results unless I do a hard power down Now it has started to download windows updates without installing them The best I saved for last...it will not shut down it only goes into Power Save mode very frustrating...suggestions please?

I had the same issue with my new Lenovo Yoga for about a day after fooling around with sleep mode and power settings. It did not wake up from sleep after that, no matter what I tried. My solution: go into the power plan settings AND RESTORE THEM (set it to factory settings). Now again it works fine :-)

Evidently the Microsoft support is not actually trying any of this. (sigh). This isn't a problem on the Surface Pro that Microsoft employees are required to use. So, the Microsoft Partners are evidently just sitting back and doing nothing about this either. Looked at the Windows 8.1 patch. From all the problems on the Internet, scared to try it. Plus there is little indication that the patch is fixing much of anything. We are evaluating a plan for a clean wipe and returning to Windows 7. The loss of business productivity is too high. Tried the MS suggested fix, evidently they never tested that as nobody claimed it fixed the problem. Plus, Microsoft Diagnostics doesn't check for it either.

Windows 8.1 in my opinion sucks until they get this problem with sleep mode fixed I have a custon built machine with Asus motherboard, I7 Cpu doing the same thing, I have to hold the power button in to shut down, or hit the reset button. Come on Microsoft fix this problem

I took two steps that seem to have resolved the problem of my computer not reawakening from sleep mode. One step that I've taken since my computer needed the hard power down is that I now close all programs except Firefox when I leave the computer alone long enough for it to go into sleep mode. The other step is based on a suggestion that I saw on another website. What I did is uncheck the option to allow the USB Root hub to "turn off this device to save power." Here are the steps that I took to do this (in Windows 8): Windows Key-X 2)Double click on Device Manager Click on the arrow next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers Towards the bottom I have 2 listings for USB Root Hub and one for USB Root Hub (xHCL) Double click on one of them and select the "Power Management" tab. Remove the checkmark next to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." Do the same to the other two USB Root Hubs. Note: I also have 3 "Generic" USB Hubs listed toward the top of the Universal Serial Bus Controller section. I don't recall why but I didn't mess with those. I suppose because the instructions that I was following didn't say to. Since I incorporated both changes at one time I can't say for sure which one (if either) solved the problem but at least in my case I haven't had any problems reawakening my computer since I made the changes. See my October 7th post for my computer's specs. I hope these steps help others but obviously your computer may be configured differently and your miles may vary. Good luck

Was having this same problem and I fixed it. Check to make sure it's actually not waking! In my case the computer itself was waking but the display adapter was not. I could hear the processor fan come back on, the hard drives spin up, but nothing on my screen. In my BIOS, there was an option to not let the integrated graphics adapter sleep. It was called "RC6 Render Standby" and I turned it off -- fixed!
