I have a Dell desktop with Windows 8 and it will wake up from sleep mode if not in use for awhile but if left for longer periods it goes into sleep mode and will not wake up. I have tried to wake it touching mouse touching power button using windows key + C no results unless I do a hard power down Now it has started to download windows updates without installing them The best I saved for last...it will not shut down it only goes into Power Save mode very frustrating...suggestions please?

I currently have NEVER SLEEP with or w/o power plugged in. Please fix immediately. I have applications that need run all day whether I'm with my laptop or not. Thx! One way that I make sure that my computer doesn't go into sleep mode when I don't want it to is to run a nifty little program named Mouse Jiggler ( https://mousejiggler.codeplex.com ) . When run this program simply generates "fake" mouse input to Windows, which jiggles the mouse pointer back and forth. Mouse Jiggler doesn't need to be installed.

Just to follow up, updated with Windows 8.1 It changed the startup background. Set the power settings back to try sleep mode. Will report on the results laer.

I have a Gateway NE722 and have the same problem. Did not notice it until the Windows 8.1 update was installed. Have to unplug, disconnect the battery, then reconnect the battery and plug back in to start. Then it starts up as if nothing was wrong. Microsoft needs to fix this...it is obviously a problem with Windows 8. I HATE WINDOWS 8 Wish I had NEVER bought a machine with Windows 8. First thing I did was install a shell program to get rid of all that Metro Screen garbage. Microsoft better start listening to its customers or my next PC will be a Google Android device.

Was having this same problem and I fixed it. Check to make sure it's actually not waking! In my case the computer itself was waking but the display adapter was not. I could hear the processor fan come back on, the hard drives spin up, but nothing on my screen. In my BIOS, there was an option to not let the integrated graphics adapter sleep. It was called "RC6 Render Standby" and I turned it off -- fixed!
