I have a Dell desktop with Windows 8 and it will wake up from sleep mode if not in use for awhile but if left for longer periods it goes into sleep mode and will not wake up. I have tried to wake it touching mouse touching power button using windows key + C no results unless I do a hard power down Now it has started to download windows updates without installing them The best I saved for last...it will not shut down it only goes into Power Save mode very frustrating...suggestions please?

I have a Gateway NE722 and have the same problem. Did not notice it until the Windows 8.1 update was installed. Have to unplug, disconnect the battery, then reconnect the battery and plug back in to start. Then it starts up as if nothing was wrong. Microsoft needs to fix this...it is obviously a problem with Windows 8. I HATE WINDOWS 8 Wish I had NEVER bought a machine with Windows 8. First thing I did was install a shell program to get rid of all that Metro Screen garbage. Microsoft better start listening to its customers or my next PC will be a Google Android device.

I had the same issue with my new Lenovo Yoga for about a day after fooling around with sleep mode and power settings. It did not wake up from sleep after that, no matter what I tried. My solution: go into the power plan settings AND RESTORE THEM (set it to factory settings). Now again it works fine :-)

Evidently the Microsoft support is not actually trying any of this. (sigh). This isn't a problem on the Surface Pro that Microsoft employees are required to use. So, the Microsoft Partners are evidently just sitting back and doing nothing about this either. Looked at the Windows 8.1 patch. From all the problems on the Internet, scared to try it. Plus there is little indication that the patch is fixing much of anything. We are evaluating a plan for a clean wipe and returning to Windows 7. The loss of business productivity is too high. Tried the MS suggested fix, evidently they never tested that as nobody claimed it fixed the problem. Plus, Microsoft Diagnostics doesn't check for it either.

Windows 8.1 in my opinion sucks until they get this problem with sleep mode fixed I have a custon built machine with Asus motherboard, I7 Cpu doing the same thing, I have to hold the power button in to shut down, or hit the reset button. Come on Microsoft fix this problem

Was having this same problem and I fixed it. Check to make sure it's actually not waking! In my case the computer itself was waking but the display adapter was not. I could hear the processor fan come back on, the hard drives spin up, but nothing on my screen. In my BIOS, there was an option to not let the integrated graphics adapter sleep. It was called "RC6 Render Standby" and I turned it off -- fixed!
