I have a Dell desktop with Windows 8 and it will wake up from sleep mode if not in use for awhile but if left for longer periods it goes into sleep mode and will not wake up. I have tried to wake it

  • touching mouse
  • touching power button
  • using windows key + C
  • no results unless I do a hard power down

Now it has started to download windows updates without installing them

The best I saved for last...it will not shut down it only goes into Power Save mode

very frustrating...suggestions please?

Was having this same problem and I fixed it.  Check to make sure it's actually not waking!  In my case the computer itself was waking but the display adapter was not.  I could hear the processor fan come back on, the hard drives spin up, but nothing on my screen.  In my BIOS, there was an option to not let the integrated graphics adapter sleep.  It was called "RC6 Render Standby" and I turned it off -- fixed!

Since this has become a generalized conversation, this is the perfect place for me to post as well:

I just recently bought a Surface 3 Pro while it was still in the pre-purchase phase. Actually, I got two. One for myself and one for my Bishop. His works like a dream, mine, on the other hand, is a total nightmare.

And it's all totally random as well. I shutdown and wake up to a dead battery cause the silly computer never shutdown, but instead went into a secret sleep mode. I go to wake it up from sleep mode and the keyboard lights, the windows button vibrates, all the right stuff, but the screen stays dark. I too have to do a hard shutdown for this to work.

The wireless network card does not always show up. It actually disappears from the entire computer randomly. I have to shutdown in the middle of school or work to fix this problem by restarting the computer.

OH! Yeah! My favorite part. The first week that we had both surfaces, they both crashed hard core. Wouldn't turn on or anything so had to do this super secret magical reset on both of them that was not in the manual or on the website... All because of a firmware update that did not install properly.

I have done everything in my power to keep from just sending this machine back to Microsoft and telling them to keep it. This morning, I came out of sleep mode and there was nothing on my start screen, nothing on my desktop and I couldn't access my hard drive. I had to forcibly shutdown and restart and there was everything again like it should have been.

BTW, anyone else wake up to a formatted hard drive before? I have only had that problem with windows 8.x and it's worse than quitting smoking. I have lost 10TB of data with that nice little bug. Just poof! Everything is gone for no reason at all. Like Microsoft has some sort of secret format switch in Win 8...?

All I know is I'm getting more and more disappointed and am wishing that there were a way to get the whole world on board with me and we all just go back to 486s and Windows 98SE. All this new technology is causing ITs like myself nothing but high blood pressure and migraines. :(

Microsoft, please, please fix windows 8. It's nice. When it works, but outside of that, it's scary.

Managed to solve it on my dell latitude. The solution is uninstall any dell drivers and programs. Waking up is working most of the time now.

Two computers, one Dell XPS 8500, one HP, have the same issue. Does not matter what I try to do, the computer won't wake up. I believe it is because of Windows 8 as I never had this issue before with other windows.

No, it's not a bit "crazy".  It's BY DESIGN.

Want to know something zany?  When I THINK  I'm shutting down my computer - because, you know, that's what the dialog box says I'm doing - I'm not!  It goes to sleep instead!!!  Isn't it good to know that your machine is running all night when you think it's shut down AND UNPLUGGED?  The event log just says, "Entering a sleep state - API" but doesn't ever tell me WHICH application caused this.

Is this the "back door" MS has been accused of hiding?  Because it sure runs all night when it wants to, forget that I told it to shut down.  Forget that there is no "Energy Star" program on my machine.  Forget that I set up Control Panel to NEVER SLEEP under any combo of circumstances.

Why would that not be tested?  Just about all models and makes are reporting this problem, and MS does exactly nothing to fix it.  Could it possibly be that they actually are - follow me closely now - sending data over the internet without our knowledge and consent?

    Naaahhhhh.....
