Uanble to install Windows Updates, Error code 0x80073712

I have not been able to install the important updates and the Error codes are 

Code 80073712

Code 80070003

How do I resolve this.

If you receive Windows Update error 0x80073712 or 80073712, it means that a file needed by Windows Update is damaged or missing. Windows has troubleshooting tools that can help you address this problem. Follow the steps below to use these tools.

Method 1: Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

  1. Open the Windows Update troubleshooter by swiping in from the right edge of the screen, tapping Search (or if you're using a mouse, pointing to the upper-right corner of the screen, moving the mouse pointer down, and then clicking Search), entering Troubleshooting in the search box, tapping or clicking Settings, and then tapping or clicking Troubleshooting. Under System and Security, tap or click Fix problems with Windows Update.
  2. Run the troubleshooter, then open Windows Update and try to install the update again.

Method 2: Run the DISM tool

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.

(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Search.) 2. Enter command prompt in the search box. 3. In the list of results, swipe down on or right-click Command Prompt, and then tap or click Run as administrator. 4. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following commands. Press the Enter key after each command:

***DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth***

***DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth***
  1. To close the Administrator: Command prompt window, type Exit, and then press Enter.
  2. Run Windows Update again.

Method 3: Refresh your PC

Click Start (Press “Windows Key + Q” to open Charms Bar.)

Type: cmd

Right click on cmd in start menu and select 'Run as Administrator'

Type: net stop wuauserv

Hit Enter

Type: ren c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution softwaredistribution.old

Hit Enter

Type: net start wuauserv

Hit Enter

Type: exit

Hit Enter

Restart once it's finished running and see if the return code still appears when checking for updates.

Attempt to download updates

    unable to move forward, I have wiped, all apps and external programs and reinstalled windows 10 , then encountered driver problems due to dell drivers ( my pc supplier ) now unobtainable or unable to update existing drivers all this on a 4 year old pc , eventually with much help from friends all seems ok , in conclusion my pc was probably unsuitable for an upgrade even though M S had authenticated it as suitable !!  never take any thing as free , it just never is;  if not in money then in time

    after trying method three ": ren c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution softwaredistribution.old" the return value was

    "The system cannot find the file specified". any help

    edit: now it is saying access denied

    Thank you for your assistance , I did as you suggested , but was unable to complete the M/S  down loads 

    The solution for me was to scrape all my old data and drivers much of which has been historically with my various Pc and carried forward pre windows 7 , from which I then updated to windows 10, this is I am sure is true for many working pc users ,I rebuilt the system from scratch using the M/S facility ie windows7 to windows 10 then letting drivers be selected by win 10 as and when

    The whole thing works like a dream
