Uanble to install Windows Updates, Error code 0x80073712

I have not been able to install the important updates and the Error codes are 

Code 80073712

Code 80070003

How do I resolve this.

If you receive Windows Update error 0x80073712 or 80073712, it means that a file needed by Windows Update is damaged or missing. Windows has troubleshooting tools that can help you address this problem. Follow the steps below to use these tools.

Method 1: Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

  1. Open the Windows Update troubleshooter by swiping in from the right edge of the screen, tapping Search (or if you're using a mouse, pointing to the upper-right corner of the screen, moving the mouse pointer down, and then clicking Search), entering Troubleshooting in the search box, tapping or clicking Settings, and then tapping or clicking Troubleshooting. Under System and Security, tap or click Fix problems with Windows Update.
  2. Run the troubleshooter, then open Windows Update and try to install the update again.

Method 2: Run the DISM tool

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.

(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Search.) 2. Enter command prompt in the search box. 3. In the list of results, swipe down on or right-click Command Prompt, and then tap or click Run as administrator. 4. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following commands. Press the Enter key after each command:

***DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth***

***DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth***
  1. To close the Administrator: Command prompt window, type Exit, and then press Enter.
  2. Run Windows Update again.

Method 3: Refresh your PC

Click Start (Press “Windows Key + Q” to open Charms Bar.)

Type: cmd

Right click on cmd in start menu and select 'Run as Administrator'

Type: net stop wuauserv

Hit Enter

Type: ren c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution softwaredistribution.old

Hit Enter

Type: net start wuauserv

Hit Enter

Type: exit

Hit Enter

Restart once it's finished running and see if the return code still appears when checking for updates.

Attempt to download updates

    hey - I'm having the same error code:

    80073712

    I've tried the following but they didn't work:

    • self-troubleshooting
    • using the CMD prompt and entering the "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image... etc"
    • also followed all the steps outlined here (everytime hitting "no" for "did this resolve the issue")

    I downloaded the "Create Windows 10 Installation Media" tool, followed the instructions for an in-place upgrade.

    (I followed the instructions in this video... https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/videoplayer/embed/RE201WL)

    When I got to where it says "Upgrade PC now", I clicked next and it said "The language or edition of the version of Windows currently installed on your PC isn't supported by this tool"

    I installed the latest update:

    2018-09 Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4100347)

    Then tried again.

    It hasn't worked at all...

    Any other suggestions please? currently I don't see any side-effects of the issue, but this will probably be an issue down the line for further updates.

    Specs: 

    AMD FX-8370 Eight-Core

    24 Gig RAM

    64 bit, x64-based processor

    Windows 10 Pro 2018

    I don't know enough about OS software to do or say anything beyond the simple self help guides that Microsoft offers.   Those simple solutions do work sometimes.  But in discussing this same problem with HP, the representative made the point that even small variations in production hardware, such as supposedly equivalent components based on market availability, can produce unknown incompatibilities in future versions of software.  So inevitably there will be machines that just won't cooperate with the normal fixes.  My machine is an HP, heavily modified, which they enjoyed hearing about and were happy to help me with a similar Windows Update failure, though they were careful to point out I had no hardware warranty.  Of course I knew that.  Anyway after trying all the normal fixes, using the remote desktop, no luck.  They collected some info and said they would research it.  Then I spoke to a Microsoft representative who said it happens a lot, again went through all the normal fixes, no luck.  Finally he did a complete reinstallation of Windows 10.   I was just happy that I didn't have to reinstall all my programs and etc.  All fixed after that.   So if the normal self help fixes don't work, I suggest contacting Microsoft Windows support directly, speak to an actual person (mine was in El Salvador) and ask them to fix it.   They were extremely nice about the whole thing and took quite a long time with me.   I do have a paid Microsoft account and I don't know if that made any difference.  There was no charge for fixing the Windows Update problem.
