Using Windows Phone 8, I am unable to open media content in text messages, says getting content but doesn't open

I received a text with the message "Get media content now". When I "click" on the message phone says "getting media content" then switches back to "get media content". The media does not open. 

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for having written on the forum.

It could be possible that you’re trying to open or download a format file which isn’t supported from Windows Phone 8.

Another origin of this problem could be related with if the files you’re trying to download or open are protected from a password. This feature isn’t supported from windows phone.

    I'm having an issue somewhat similar on my Lumia 920. Unfortunately, I can't simply solve it by turning data "on." In fact, I already have data on, I click on "Get media content (1KB)" for group texts and "Get media content (32KB)" for pictures, and for some reason it goes into a state that says "Getting media content..." but never actually downloads. So, I can't refresh the message nor can I try to re-download. It is extremely annoying to have to ask people to re-send things many times over.

    I've also run my own tests to see if it is a network issue or a device specific issue. Essentially, I see the text come in with the toast notification saying "Media content in this message." So before I go to the message, I turn on data (I have a 200mb plan so I conserve it) and turn off Wifi so I'm only using data. I go into a couple apps that need network access to ensure my data is working properly and when that is confirmed, I go to the message and click to download the media content. Still, that does not solve the problem. (if it did, I would still be upset that it takes that many steps to see a picture). So, I'm sure it's a device specific issue and keep in mind, this is my 3rd Lumia because the first 2 were messed up and this issue occurred on all of them.

    As of now, I have a 1KB message currently in the "Getting media content..." state and has been like that for two days now. I still have no idea what it says. Any chance someone could help?

    I had this same problem a few weeks ago. I had my data connection turned off and connected to a wifi network. Picture messages cannot be received over wifi unfortunately.

    Wish there was a fix for that...

    Wait - Is there an MS article explaining why this is?  I'm having that problem too, and 90% of my time is spent in wifi rich, but cel signal poor areas.  Every single phone i've had before that supported wifi is able to do this, so why not my new "state of the art" windows phone?

    I had a similar issue... I had WiFi calling enabled so WiFi was the primary route for calling, MMS, etc. as soon as I disabled WiFi calling my PIcture messages downloaded fine when selecting the "get media content" link.

    The question... is this something that can be fixed in Windows Phone 8 by Microsoft or is this due to the carrier (T-Mobile) in my case?  If I can do WiFi calling, I should certainly be able to download picture messages.

    I do not believe it is just T-Mobile. I have AT&T and am experiencing the same problem. So, my guess is its the windows phone. 

    One would think that things like this would be more important to fix that getting us "instragram" or some game. Lets get this phone up to speed with android & iphones!

    I do not know why some pictures come in just fine and others come in as "get media content" then nothing!

    just a wee bit frustrated. I had the BB Bold and was going to get the new BB.. but changed my mind when I saw the screen size. Thinking maybe it was the wrong decision!
