I have been concerned about my systems security since upgrading to window 8 last November on occations a phone has appeared in my network devices list well windows knows the phone it can get make model and mac code but after clicking on the phones propities it disappears. At first I thought it might have got in through my wireless router which is a virgin super hub made by netgear and after a little digging I changed the password and even the way devices connect wirelessly and made my hug a mac code only connection. This worked for a few weeks then hey presto another phone or tablet appeared on my network. I even paid a extra few quid to Mcafee and upgraded to access all areas to cover my tablet and my our phone the issue persisted . I was so annoyed at this time but I had noticed the my processor was a 64 bit capable processor so I took the plunge and brought another windows pro 8 pack as the system had to have a clean install. All has been fine for six weeks since I upgraded to a 64 bit machine and suddenly it has all started again I have had three different devices appearing in my network map and I have not got a clue if my system has been compromised. Or is it this think is a way for others to connect to the internet for free using my isp which is illegal.
Does anyone have any ideas where I turn to, to solve this problem ?

I had this issue ,i have searched a lot in the internet and no absolute solution for this, I have tried very simple way through the router by blocking the mac address of these devices and it works fine for me , you have to keep watching your network for few days and when you found any unknown device (most likely it is a phone with just MAC address and no IP address) block the the these MAC address in your router

I had the same thing pop up on my windows 10 machine. M201 as telephony. I am narrowing it down to the fact that my Router has a build in system for a 4G SiM card, which is my back up internet if my line connection should fail. I think that's where the M201 device sits. I guess I am wondering if you have a Mobile SIM card in your router as a fail over connection as well.

Over the years there have been new wireless protocols developed. A, B, G, N, and now I think even a newer one is starting...
It may be that your previous devices simply didn't detect this particular protocol..
If your older devices didn't detect N, and the unknown devices are in fact N, that would explain why they weren't there before... This is just a guess because I know nothing about your device specs.
The fact that they are visable doesn't mean "Connected"... I haven't played with any wireless lately so I don't remember what can be made "Not Visable" for instance, but previously when trying out wireless I had numerous "Devices" show up on my list, but was blocked by their device from connecting to them.
Some weren't blocked though, and I was able to connect through their device...
Maybe you can turn off the capability of using the A, B, G, N, or whatever you are not using...
If you use N and they do too, then that won't work...
Can you select a specific channel for your use that there are no other devices detected on?
I have just come across this even though the original post is a few weeks old. I have also read all the replies.
I am having the same issue since I got a wifi hub. I have got W8 (brand new) andan old device with Vista. I am getting phone icons appearing in my network sharing centre with a MAC code and a name e.g. Nexus 4. I am also getting a 'generic network connected device' with no MAC but a 'unique identification' number. A few minutes after they show up, they disappear. None of these devices are mine. I have a filter list on my settings.
I tried turning off my SSID and that gave me problems connecting my own phone wirelessly.
I have not given out my password to anyone, have reset the hub, changed my connecting password, contacted microsoft support and of course my BB provider. I have Norton, McAffee and have been running the Microsoft Safety Scan. No-one has any particular solution and although people say not to worry, it is a worry. I have never had this before.
My new desktop (Windows 8) is also 64 bit.
This may not help but I feel so frustrated and upset that I need to post about it.

I'm not familiar wth McAffee...I spent a number of years using Zone Alarm Firewall, and then PC Tools, which no longer has a standalone firewall program for Win 8.
The point being is that they both had a section that identified anything that was detected on the network, and allowed blocking it...My guess is that Windoiws Firewall is able to be set do this also, but is much less user friendly when it comes to anything other than default settings...
I most certainly understand your concern with unknown devices showing on your Network....
I was a bit surprised to find a bunch of other connections showing up on my wireless adapter the first time I used one.
I'm not sure why this appeared only after Switching to Win 8, except that perhaps Win 7 didn't display non-connected devices, and Win 8 shows everything...It also could be that some of your neighbors got some new toys!!!
