I have been concerned about my systems security since upgrading to window 8 last November on occations a phone has appeared in my network devices list well windows knows the phone it can get make model and mac code but after clicking on the phones propities it disappears. At first I thought it might have got in through my wireless router which is a virgin super hub made by netgear and after a little digging I changed the password and even the way devices connect wirelessly and made my hug a mac code only connection. This worked for a few weeks then hey presto another phone or tablet appeared on my network. I even paid a extra few quid to Mcafee and upgraded to access all areas to cover my tablet and my our phone the issue persisted . I was so annoyed at this time but I had noticed the my processor was a 64 bit capable processor so I took the plunge and brought another windows pro 8 pack as the system had to have a clean install. All has been fine for six weeks since I upgraded to a 64 bit machine and suddenly it has all started again I have had three different devices appearing in my network map and I have not got a clue if my system has been compromised. Or is it this think is a way for others to connect to the internet for free using my isp which is illegal.
Does anyone have any ideas where I turn to, to solve this problem ?

I had this issue ,i have searched a lot in the internet and no absolute solution for this, I have tried very simple way through the router by blocking the mac address of these devices and it works fine for me , you have to keep watching your network for few days and when you found any unknown device (most likely it is a phone with just MAC address and no IP address) block the the these MAC address in your router

I had the same thing pop up on my windows 10 machine. M201 as telephony. I am narrowing it down to the fact that my Router has a build in system for a 4G SiM card, which is my back up internet if my line connection should fail. I think that's where the M201 device sits. I guess I am wondering if you have a Mobile SIM card in your router as a fail over connection as well.

I'm not familiar wth McAffee...I spent a number of years using Zone Alarm Firewall, and then PC Tools, which no longer has a standalone firewall program for Win 8.
The point being is that they both had a section that identified anything that was detected on the network, and allowed blocking it...My guess is that Windoiws Firewall is able to be set do this also, but is much less user friendly when it comes to anything other than default settings...
I most certainly understand your concern with unknown devices showing on your Network....
I was a bit surprised to find a bunch of other connections showing up on my wireless adapter the first time I used one.
I'm not sure why this appeared only after Switching to Win 8, except that perhaps Win 7 didn't display non-connected devices, and Win 8 shows everything...It also could be that some of your neighbors got some new toys!!!
I was actually in a Sony store today and I showed some intrest in a sony vaio laptop in the store and after getting friendly with the salesperson whom seemed very knowlegable about windows 8 he said to me after explaining my issue he said something along the same lines as yourself slance 310 that it was picking up on wireless devices in the range of my adapter which is why they showed on my network map which analising it this makes sense as you mentioned any device in ranger with the same protocall so with this in mind I will let sleeping dogs lie.
Just for your info Slance 310 I had this issue with windows firewall which prompted me to install Mcafee's access all areas package and these devices do not show up on my mcafee home network map, but are still there on my network map occationly assuming the phone/tablet is turned on.

I doubt that this is coming over the "Internet" as the term is normally used...meaning it is not coming through your service providers system... if it is not showing up in your router, that only leaves the wireless adapter in your machine...
When you say you have denied connections through your security features, you may be doing exactly that. They are visable, but not connected for instance.
The fact that you can see other devices doesn't mean they can "see" your computer... or connect..
As I mentioned before...wireless devices will detect anything in range that is using the same protocall.
If I recall, the other connections can be blocked from view, but that won't make you feel any better if you know they are there and it bothers you...
Have you tried using Windows Firewall to insure that these devices are blocked?
I've never tried it with Windows so I can't be of much help there, but it is somewhat simple with some of the 3rd party firewalls
