I was taken to slimware to update drivers. Is this legitimate? Or is there a better, safer way to upadate.

Hi,
You should obtain your Driver Software from your Computer or Hardware Manufacturer, not through 3rd party Programs or Windows Update.
Go to your Computer or Hardware Manufacture's website > Driver and Software Support Section > look up your Computer or Hardware Model number > then your Operating System > locate the correct Drivers > download and install them.

If suggestions above have not help you to get rid of this 'bogus' program, please try Revo Uninstaller and MBAM (as suggested in many related threads) which should take care of this PUP.
MBAM should detect it as 'PUP.Optional.DriverUpdate.A'.
This > 'Remove PUP.Optional.DriverUpdate.A virus Removal Guide' may be of assistance.
AdwCleaner (a trustworthy anti-adware scanner) may also be a good idea to search (and remove) for any other Adware or Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) that might have been installed there with or without your knowledge or consent.
You need to remove - not only 'DriverUpdate' - but everything "SlimWare Utilities" that might have been installed (SlimCleaner, for instance?) there with or without your knowledge.

Slimware has just asked for money ($29) to "renew for a year", maybe this is how they make their money. I do not remember how slimware got onto my machine in the first place, I do not feel confident about them although I have to date had no identifiable problems as a result of their presence. I wish that I could use them because it would save a tedious job. What do others think?
My opinion is that if you are very careful, with a new computer, to follow the manufacturers suggestions and guidelines, most of the problems which I also encountered with the "Slimware" issues will never occur. Unfortunately, here in Florida, we have a computer store (still investigating this lead) and one of their salespeople recommended a particular security program (Total Defense) for a hefty rebate (which incidentally never arrived). Thus a string of unfortunate events subsequently occurred. I know that I erred in clicking on (to my naive eyes) an alert for driver updates, and that got the ball rolling for the scammers. I have rectified most of the issues through a Nationally known Security Company and have had some relief since. Hope this helps.

Question is how is it that these people can update your hardware from wherever? how can my computer be safecarded from these so called updaters.
