How to disable gestures (charms bar, edge swipes, etc...) without changing the registry

I've had a Windows 8 laptop for a few days and the charms bar/settings pages that kept popping up out of nowhere were driving me absolutely insane.  BUT, I finally figured out how to turn them off.

I went into control panel>hardware and sound>mouse>device settings>settings.  From there you can adjust a lot of the trackpad settings, including DISABLE EDGE SWIPES.

I have a Toshiba Satellite with a synaptics mouse/trackpad, so i cant guarantee this works with all models, devices, etc.

Windows 8 for laptop is now tolerable!  Hope this helps!

Try this; maybe it will work:

Control Panel>Mouse>UltraNav>TouchPad Settings>Application Gestures>Edge Swipes>Deselect “Enable Edge Swipes”

My new Acer Laptop does not have Hardware & Sound setting. The Elan touch pad is very unstable, now Update issue's on 8.1.  It is a well known issue on this horrific OS many can no longer install Windows updates. I had a 3rd Microsoft Level II tech in my laptop yesterday, for another 3 hours running every fix they have and my laptop no longer can install any Critical Windows updates & my charms menu remains out of control. The Microsoft tech did not even let me know why nothing is working he just gave up & quit  disconnecting the remote access with no comment.  I thought that was unprofessional. That is a total of 9 hours where Microsoft Level II techs can not fix my new Laptop. If that does not prove Windows 8.1 is the worst OS, nothing will.

    Hi Painkiller17,

This may not be the answer you are looking for, but, I offer it in an attempt to help you.

You can buy a Gear Head wireless optical mouse for $15 at any Walmart. The receiver plugs into a USB port on your laptop.

YOU WILL NEVER HAVE TO TOUCH YOUR TOUCH PAD AGAIN. Good luck with the Updates I have no suggestions on that problem.
