How to disable gestures (charms bar, edge swipes, etc...) without changing the registry

I've had a Windows 8 laptop for a few days and the charms bar/settings pages that kept popping up out of nowhere were driving me absolutely insane.  BUT, I finally figured out how to turn them off.

I went into control panel>hardware and sound>mouse>device settings>settings.  From there you can adjust a lot of the trackpad settings, including DISABLE EDGE SWIPES.

I have a Toshiba Satellite with a synaptics mouse/trackpad, so i cant guarantee this works with all models, devices, etc.

Windows 8 for laptop is now tolerable!  Hope this helps!

Try this; maybe it will work:

Control Panel>Mouse>UltraNav>TouchPad Settings>Application Gestures>Edge Swipes>Deselect “Enable Edge Swipes”

I actually had a Level II Microsoft tech this week in my brand new laptop over two sessions to stop the Charms Bar from popping up. He entered special code into the registry at the suggestion of Microsoft Windows 8.1 developers. It still does not stop the horrific Charm menu from popping up every 2 minutes, freezing all work. He even witnessed it for over 1 hour. Winaero Charms Bar Killer did not work at all either. I have a elan touch pad, so some of the settings mentioned in this blog are not available. Windows 8.1 is the worst OS on the planet. Even the touch pad, mouse are jumpy & extremely unstable.

The fact that  Microsoft Level II technicians can not even stop this horrific charms menu is proof windows 8.1 is for a tablet and not laptops. Why would I want finger prints all over a laptop screen swiping all day? I don't or I would of purchased a tablet.

    >>you dont need a special code <<----and yr right windows 8 is going to make even vista a sweet dream we had lol!

isten.. i got windows 8 ligit on my new laptop, and cant download 8.1.  you will find everything you need, on youtube. i am on a LAPTOP. with 8 on it. and i have comppletly disabled charms bar. using THIS VID:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TXBCZEztOU

YOU DONT NEED A WINDOW8 MICROSOFT tech. and just becausee they say EVEN THEY cant do it, doesnt mean no one else has figured it out. ust like u can still down load music and play it on yr itunes without downloading it from itunes! u dont need a microsoft dude.

u have to go a tid bit into yr hard drive to make it stop. but its safe.  please go to the link i just posted.

    this guy is great.

Thanks for the info but way ahead of you. We tried this as shown on the YouTube video, the regedit is still in my registry. The charms bar is now popping up even more, almost once every minute.

I have Windows 8.1 which makes using regedits fixes for Windows 8 impossible. They are not working on Windows 8.1. Bottom line: Microsoft developers are refusing to come out with an update. They are content to have an OS that antagonizes customers with the horrific Chams Bar Menu..

If you look at my original post, i posted in reference to those who coudnt download 8.1.

so i'm sorry if i made that mistake as i was speaking on windows8. not 8.1.

    sorry!

but hey. i was just thinking, if you're having MORE probs with .1 now, cant u just uninstall it and go back to 8? i realize that there will be a .2 and .3 ect come into play eventually,  but i'm sure by that time, youll be able to have 8 and download .1 .2 3 ect as it comes about.

vista doesnt look 1/2 bad now eh! lol jeez i downloaded the start up drop menu for the windows 7 too and i'm inlove with seeing it again lol
