How to disable gestures (charms bar, edge swipes, etc...) without changing the registry

This was driving my crazy!  I would scroll down on the right hand side of the screen, then move my mouse to the center of the screen and the charm bar always appeared!!!

much easier way

few  clicks one restart no reg change

side swipe is the issue with non touch screen windows 8 etc

to turn off side swipe if you cant just see what too do???

right click the desktop space

choose "personalize"

then change " desktop icons "

add a tick to control panel

and choose ok

then open the control panel icon

now on the desktop.. as an icon

and choose "view by small icons"

then choose "mouse"

then look along the applet tabs and choose "touchpad"

then choose "options" box

then the mouse pad choices applet comes up {if not look too the drivers}

then untick "right edge swipe"

and perhaps "top edge swipe"

some apps will try to use these anyway

if you get issues check out the mouse pad drivers and chipset drivers

ok so side swipe etc is aok if you have a touch screen but not good for a mouse pad

and no touch lcd

better unticked and get rid of it

and reboot !!

you can add this .reg to further suppress the swipe bar

after both its only available if you move the pointer far right top or bottom

or windows key + C keys

the windows key is beside the alt

so... top or bottom right corner   ... then sharp left

this is also what microsoft says it does

pitty there default settings

enable swipe and dont detect touch LCD and only enable

swipe if you have touch and drag etc...

its a sad day because i like windows 8 now

cant wait for windows 10...

I managed to get as far as teh mouse icon, but "device settings" does not come up when you click on it, so no further forward, but thanks for your  help anyway, it might have worked, so gave it a try. back to the drawing board, or maybe a double barrelled shotgun, and just blast the thing off of my screen.

I have a lenovo laptop as well. Followed th instructions above to no avail , the same problem as you, no device settings under mouse. So unable to disable the annoying charm bar, HATE it with a vengeance. I would not recommend windows 8 to anyone, so far it has been a complete disaster.
