How to disable gestures (charms bar, edge swipes, etc...) without changing the registry

I've had a Windows 8 laptop for a few days and the charms bar/settings pages that kept popping up out of nowhere were driving me absolutely insane.  BUT, I finally figured out how to turn them off.

I went into control panel>hardware and sound>mouse>device settings>settings.  From there you can adjust a lot of the trackpad settings, including DISABLE EDGE SWIPES.

I have a Toshiba Satellite with a synaptics mouse/trackpad, so i cant guarantee this works with all models, devices, etc.

Windows 8 for laptop is now tolerable!  Hope this helps!

Try this; maybe it will work:

Control Panel>Mouse>UltraNav>TouchPad Settings>Application Gestures>Edge Swipes>Deselect “Enable Edge Swipes”

I also have a Toshiba Satellite (installed with the appalling Windows 8) and the constant charms bar irritation has also been driving me nuts (constantly coming up whenever I DON'T want it to - e.g. when trying to scroll up or down on a page).

I followed your advice but the box "DISABLE EDGE SWIPES" is already ticked. Turning it on or off makes no difference to the utter excrement Charms Bar.

Help someone!  How can I either a) remove the Charms Bar or b) go back to an old (and much better) version of Windows?

There really should be an option from Microsoft to disable items they don't want from Windows 8, or make Windows 8 an option. Drives me crazy and none of the options including changing the registry is working on my new laptop

You should contact toshiba... They built in that anoying swipe to right feature on the touchpad.

Didn't work for me. I am sooo frustrated with the charm bar. I might like Windows 8 if it wasn't for that thing. I have tried everything to disable it, nothing working on my Laptop. Toshiba S55-A5255 Satellite
