Try this; maybe it will work:
Control Panel>Mouse>UltraNav>TouchPad Settings>Application Gestures>Edge Swipes>Deselect “Enable Edge Swipes”

I've had a Windows 8 laptop for a few days and the charms bar/settings pages that kept popping up out of nowhere were driving me absolutely insane. BUT, I finally figured out how to turn them off.
I went into control panel>hardware and sound>mouse>device settings>settings. From there you can adjust a lot of the trackpad settings, including DISABLE EDGE SWIPES.
I have a Toshiba Satellite with a synaptics mouse/trackpad, so i cant guarantee this works with all models, devices, etc.
Windows 8 for laptop is now tolerable! Hope this helps!

1 - Windows 8.1, right-click or tap-and-hold the Start button and then choose Run. Or simple hit WIN+R.
2 - Type "regedit" and hit enter.
3 - Find this path and make a backup
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTPEnh\PlugInConfig\Defaults\CustomZones
4 - Right click on the "CustomZones" and Delete
5 - Close Regedit and you are done !
You don't even need to restart your laptop to see it is disabled. Just try swiping and you will see that it is gone !

2015-07-31T08:44:54+00:00 I agree with Chris Borgia. Maybe you should employ him as when I asked the question of Microsoft help they inform that the swipe cannot be disabled?? So thank you Chris it was driving me insane as well... WHO ever thought that screen option was a good or needed option, is overthinking or well under thinking their job.

2015-07-23T00:31:23+00:00 I have been having this problem with my Lenovo Flex, and having no luck--every blog was a bust, and I was about to quit, but I finally figured it out! It's really easy, but it's in a really illogical place. I'm not sure how many models this will work with, but if you're as frustrated as I was, here it is in all its simple glory:
Open control panel and navigate to: Appearance and Personalization>Personalization Then click "Change mouse pointers" in the upper left of that window. In the window that pops up, there will be a tab for the brand of your touchpad (in my case ELAN). Either double click that tab or highlight it and click "Options..." below. From here on, I think it will depend on which brand you are using.
For ELAN users: On the left side of the window is "Edge Swipe". Click "Edge Swipe" and uncheck the box marked "Enable". Then just click apply and you're set!
I hope this helps someone who is as desperate as I was!
