Try this; maybe it will work:
Control Panel>Mouse>UltraNav>TouchPad Settings>Application Gestures>Edge Swipes>Deselect “Enable Edge Swipes”

I've had a Windows 8 laptop for a few days and the charms bar/settings pages that kept popping up out of nowhere were driving me absolutely insane. BUT, I finally figured out how to turn them off.
I went into control panel>hardware and sound>mouse>device settings>settings. From there you can adjust a lot of the trackpad settings, including DISABLE EDGE SWIPES.
I have a Toshiba Satellite with a synaptics mouse/trackpad, so i cant guarantee this works with all models, devices, etc.
Windows 8 for laptop is now tolerable! Hope this helps!

I sure would like to know who the bonehead is that thought charms was a great idea! Can anyone really be that stupid?

Well done this fixed it for me within seconds
Thank you sooooooo much
I have a Lenovo 305 with the same problem. my solution is (not very techy) take a piece of tissue about 6mm wide fold it 3times along the length the same length as the touch pad. place this along the edge of the touch pad and secure it with a piece of tape. this will stop your finger touching the edge of the touch pad so will on activate the charm swipe. you can still get the charms up by placing the curser in the right top corner of the screen.
As I say, not a very technical solution but a least it works and you can still access the charms. hope this helps
change mouse settings> ELAN > options > unclick "edge swiping"
This is for toshiba satellite.
One of windows most annoying features.....
