How to disable gestures (charms bar, edge swipes, etc...) without changing the registry

I've had a Windows 8 laptop for a few days and the charms bar/settings pages that kept popping up out of nowhere were driving me absolutely insane. BUT, I finally figured out how to turn them off.

I went into control panel>hardware and sound>mouse>device settings>settings. From there you can adjust a lot of the trackpad settings, including DISABLE EDGE SWIPES.

I have a Toshiba Satellite with a synaptics mouse/trackpad, so i cant guarantee this works with all models, devices, etc.

Windows 8 for laptop is now tolerable! Hope this helps!

Try this; maybe it will work:

Control Panel>Mouse>UltraNav>TouchPad Settings>Application Gestures>Edge Swipes>Deselect “Enable Edge Swipes”

Talk about "absolutely insane" and it sounds like my reaction! Haha!

I used to be quite diligent about going to control panel, and probably could have figured this out myself without too much trouble. But I am getting old maybe(?) --so it is good to have someone else

post solutions like this! :-D

Thank you so much you have just made my day!! Have had anew computer for about 4 weeks and this has been driving me nuts and just thought it was just something to do with windows 8.

I strongly urge you to think twice before downloading Winaero Charms Bar Killer.

I downloaded it right from their site, clicked on the light grey download link which is the official link at that time, it did not work for me to kill the charms menu. It downloaded the software & malware. The site seems to share downloads with other rogue software. I then downloaded Classic Shell, but it did not kill the out of control Charms menu. If you want to research programs- I downloaded Anvisoft OneStart, it worked the best to kill the charms bar & restored windows 7 applications that are easy to customize. I also turned down the sensitivity setting on the horrible, jumpy elan touch pad. This seems to keep the charms menu from popping up every 2 minutes on my new Acer Windows 8.1 laptop. Good Luck.
