This:

  1. Open an administrative command prompt
  2. Type the following four commands:
  3. net stop wuauserv

cd %systemroot%

ren SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

net start wuauserv 4. Try to install updates again.

and this:

a)Right Click the Start screen (bottom left hand corner)

b)Click "Run"

c)Type: "WSReset.exe" and hit enter

was solving my issue.

Thanks.

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your response.

This problem may occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:

  1. If the Windows Update database is corrupted.
  2. If the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) service does not receive a content link header.
  3. If a required system file is registered incorrectly.

Please follow the below steps and check if it helps:

I suggest you to refer to the section: manually reset windows update components from the following link:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058?wa=wsignin1.0

NOTE: Important this section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Even after attempting all of the above steps, I still am having problems downloading updates to apps.  Most of the time, apps will stay stuck on "Pending", and their progress bars will remain at 0%.  After canceling the downloads and closing the app, I re-opened after clearing the Store cache and restarted the downloads; this time, the progress bars for 2 apps jumped to 100% but they still said "Pending".  They stayed that way for about 15 minutes and I force-closed the app again.

After running the troubleshooter, it claimed to have detected and fixed two problems (reset security settings and fixed missing/corrupted files).  After restarting the computer, opening the Store app, and trying to install the app updates yet again, they still remained at "Pending" indefinitely.

Are there any other steps to take to get these updates to install successfully?

I am facing the similar issue. Have been trying to install Skype for windows 8 on brand new lap top. On the app store-> Installing Apps section, skype app remains in pending state forever. I have tried all the steps mentioned above but no luck.
