This:

  1. Open an administrative command prompt
  2. Type the following four commands:
  3. net stop wuauserv

cd %systemroot%

ren SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

net start wuauserv 4. Try to install updates again.

and this:

a)Right Click the Start screen (bottom left hand corner)

b)Click "Run"

c)Type: "WSReset.exe" and hit enter

was solving my issue.

Thanks.

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your response.

This problem may occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:

  1. If the Windows Update database is corrupted.
  2. If the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) service does not receive a content link header.
  3. If a required system file is registered incorrectly.

Please follow the below steps and check if it helps:

I suggest you to refer to the section: manually reset windows update components from the following link:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058?wa=wsignin1.0

NOTE: Important this section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

Please do let us know if you need further assistance. We will be glad to assist.

    Emkay,

I'm really happy that you're active and attempting to help us. I want to pass on my personal gratitude.

But I want to say, calling McAfee about this is chasing down rat holes: This problem has nothing to do with McAfee.

There is a corruption in the Windows registry when the apps try to register themselves to the OS.

I've been through 1,000 things - and I have one more left to try, but one thing *absolutely* will work:

If you try the steps I put above, and delete each registry key associated with a particular app - you pending apps will unstick and those apps will install.

That points to an issue in the Windows Store app itself and it's registration process - not any third party software.

As my Sports app just failed to do an update, I'm about to repair it and I'll take a detailed screenshot of the fix and share it on onedrive publically.

But this is Windows Store's app registry process that's broken. The only other fix besides deleting registry keys I've found is create another administrator account on the pc, remove the account with the broken registry, and then re-add it.

I find then the store will work until the first round of updates and then those apps will break again -- again, leading me to the conclusion the issue is with the Windows Store App installation process itself.

Many thanks for assisting us with this. While the solutions have not resolved my issues, they have been helpful in ruling out what's actually happening.

OK, I would advise to contact McAfee and ask them about the download issue you are having as a side-step.

I do assume you had tried to install the update with McAfee off? If so, please please enter %temp% in the Windows search bar. A new window will appear that will point to c:\users*username*\Appdata\Local\Temp. There, please look for the folder or text files (txt or log file extensions) that were created during the update installation (at the same date and hour you had tried to install the update yesterday). These would be OneNote update installation log files which might contain more information on the failure. Basically, take a look at it's content and look for anything that has OneNote in it. If you find the file (there should be only one that is of interest) please upload it somewhere (like on your OneDrive) for us to take a look.

    But first try this:

    1. Reboot your computer.
    2. Disable McAfee.
    3. Repair MS Office as mentioned here: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Repair-an-Office-application-7821d4b6-7c1d-4205-aa0e-a6b40c5bb88b. If prompted - select "Online Repair" (though this feature should not apply in your case).

If you receive an error saying that "another installation is currently running" please start PowerShell as an administrator (as mentioned in previous posts) and enter:

    Stop-Service msiserver

    Stop-Process -Name msiexec -Force

Afterwards, please retry repairing MS Office.

    Thanks again.

My C drive has about 800 GB of free space, so this does not seem to be the problem.

The good news:  When I deactivated my antivirus program and did the disk cleanup,  the update did fully download, so that was apparently part of the problem.  The antivirus program is the McAfee Internet Security Suite, and is the 2016 update. Windows Defender had already been deactivated by the McAfee program.

The bad news:  When I tried to install the update, I received the message, "The installation of this package failed."  There were no further error messages.  The installation did go through screens for "update detection" and "extracting files" before giving the failure message, which appeared after the "please wait for installation" screen.

I did reconfirm that, according to Microsoft, Office 2010 is compatible with Windows 10.

Any further thoughts?  I really do appreciate your help.
