Windows Update error 80072efe or 80072f76

I run windows update and it fails with this error message. I have downloaded the cab file and run it locally. I still get this message after it was 'fixed'. It generates a log file that is over ten thousand lines long. There does not appear to be a mechanism for attaching files so I will paste it only on request.

In the meantime here is the outputReport

    The update that failed is the one I opened the question with...      

    You opened the thread stating that IE9 was the "Last Installed Update." [emphasis mine]

    Are you suggesting that IE9 was the last update offered to the computer (as of 31 March) but it failed to install?

    Has KB2817183, KB2813170, KB2808735 and/or KB2823324 been offered & successfully installed today (09 April)?

    Is IE9 or IE10 installed according to IE: Help | About [Alt+H+A]?

    The update that failed is the one I opened the question with. No kb number. You are the one talking about security updates (and they call me mad!)

    And which security-related update (KB number) failed with a 9C48 error, Harry? [1]

    Any more 80072EFE or 80072F76 errors?

    [PS: Are you called Mad Harry because you're angry or because everybody thinks you're crazy? <w>]

    [1] Note: Windows Internet Explorer 10 is not a security-related update (yes, even though it's classified as an Important update).

    Performed the above instructions exactly as requested.

    Failed with error code 9C48 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

    ACTIONS

    [You will want to print these instructions for offline reference. IMPORTANT => DON'T SKIP ANY STEP & perform all Steps in one, uninterrupted session! If a Step says to reboot,reboot!]

    1. Re-assert Internet Explorer as the default Browser in the CUSTOM (<=important!) section ofSet Program Access and Computer Defaults. [1]

    2a. Right-click on the following link and SAVE the download to your desktop: http://www.slipstick.com/problems/reg/chromehtml.reg [2]

    2b. Double-click on the file you saved in #2a above & accept the prompt to MERGE the data with the Registry.

    1. Open Internet Explorer (only!) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 [ignore any DOES NOT APPLY warnings as well as the APPLIES TO section] & run the Fix It.

    Note=> For optimal results, check the Delete personal settings option.

    4a. Open Internet Explorer (only!) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910336 [ignore the title & Symptoms].

    4b. IMPORTANT! => Dismiss/close the Windows Update troubleshooter pop-up! - then...

    4c. Ignoring any "Not recommended" or similar warnings, run Fix It 50202 in DEFAULT and then AGGRESSIVE modes. [3]

    5a. Reboot then run a manual check for updates, uncheck & then hide Bing Desktop (KB2694771)...

    5b. ...then agree to install any security-related updates offered (if any); follow all prompts.
