I can't get online with Windows Live Mail any more, and get a blank error message

I accidently pressed the offline button in Windows Live Mail and now it says

"You are working offline, do you wan't to connect now" when I try to receive/send emails.

But when I press yes it just repeats the question one more time and then I get an error message saying

"Execution of requested activities is terminated. More information to be found under the error tab", but the error tab is blank.

(NOTE: I have the Swedish version so I'm not sure the texts looks exactly like this in the English version!)

I haven't changed any settings for the email server (which is mail.bdtv.se) and I have tried to restart the computer.

When I go to the email server via a browser (to webmail.bdtv.se) I can send and receive emails, so the problem is probably not there.

To be sure, I have checked all the server settings in the Windows Live Mail configuration and everything looks ok.

But it still doesn't work...

I run Windows 7 with all the latest updates installed.

If like me, you use Firefox, or any other non-Internet Explorer browser, then you will have to do the following;

  1. Open up MS Internet Explorer and go online.
  2. Close IE
  3. Open Windows Live Mail. . . . . You are online again.!
  4. Repeat as necessary when selecting offline in Windows Live mail, or checking mail when your Internet connection is not actively connected online. It will set itself as offline.

Go back to a restore point. It's the only solution.

I think it's because of the installation of IE10 in Windows 7 by Windows Update, last tuesday 12th.

I solved this problem by uninstalling this update to IE 10.

    Problem solved!

    Via Task Manager I killed one of the tasks related to Windows Live Mail (think it was wlcomm.exe) while WLM was still running, and then after I closed and restarted WLM I could go online again!

    (However, it was weird it didn't help to restart the computer!)

    My theory is that some internal connection parameter for some reason got saved with an invalid "offline" value, while other parameters still indicated "online", and therefore the whole application got stuck in an invalid state.

    But when killing the wlcomm task (while WLM was still running) it was forced to reinitialize all the internal parameters at next startup (well, it's just a theory...)

    Today with Live Mail I accidently clicked to work off line switch, and never cold receive again.  Was able to send as I could log in the firefox browser and check a remote email box.

    This is stupid, as if I hit the live mail work off line switch again, the only way to set it on is through IE10, which I had no Idea for a few hours until reading this forum thread.

    Even if it is set on using IE10, the Icon at top is showing off line with the icon at lower right showing I'm working on line

    So Microsoft what is the fix for this, without needing to open up IE10 to turn the work on line switch.  I sure feel sorry for all those still trying to figure this out.

    It is possible that the issue is caused by a corruption within the program. For us to isolate and troubleshoot the issue, please try to repair your Windows Live Mail. To do this, you can follow the steps below:

    For Windows 8:

    1. Click the Windows button on your keyboard.
    2. Type Control Panel and hit Enter.
    3. Click Programs.
    4. Click Programs and Features.
    5. Search for Windows Essentials 2012 on the list and then select it.
    6. Click Uninstall/Change.
    7. Click Repair all Windows Essentials programs.

    For Windows Vista/7:

    1. Click the Start menu.
    2. Click Control Panel.
    3. Click Programs.
    4. Click Programs and Features.
    5. Search for Windows Essentials 2012on the list and then select it.
    6. Click Uninstall/Change.
    7. Click Repair all Windows Essentials programs.

    For Windows XP:

    1. Click the Start menu.
    2. Click Control Panel.
    3. Click Add or Remove Programs.
    4. Search for Windows Live Essentials on the list and then select it.
    5. Click Change/Remove.
    6. Click Repair, and then click Continue.

    In addition, please try to reconfigure your account. This will refresh Windows Live Mail and might also fix the issue. To do this, kindly follow the steps within this **link**.
