I have windows 7, and for the past few months I am unable to update windows.
Windows update is stuck at downloading 0kb 0% and after viewing all the similar posts around the web regarding this problem I still cant fix it, even after trying everything (stopping and restarting the service, disabling av and firewall, delete softwaredistribute folder and so on...).
Im desperate, please help.

Here is another tool available from Windows Task Manager:
Resource Monitor
it shows CPU, Disk, Network and Memory utilization.
Even when network is quiet, Windows Update uses CPU and Disk
In services tab of Windows Task Manager find the Windows Update service 'wuauserv',
right click, Go to Process (click on Show processes from all users in Processes tab beforehand). This would give you pid with which you can check CPU, Disk etc in Resource Monitor.
I tried all resourceful method provided by "Arya S Asok", and made it work with the method 3.
However it wasn't as simple as he/she described in the jan 13th, 2013 reply, because this hyperlink is outdated and not easy to find again and because not my Windows Update was not working well. Moreover my Internet Explorer could not download "offline" Windows Updates... I had to rely of Firefox for that!
After I applied these downlowded updates (about 30MB), Windows Update, IE, and MS Security Essentials started to work fine again. (PS: I did not find any viruses)

This might be useful in order to "google it" once more....

Yes I know that and that is how I found out that the performance degrade was because of Windows Update running. As I pointed out in my original post, CPU running at 50% to 80% (on windows update). While disk activity is practically nill. This is during the "Download" phase of the update not even to the updating part. But that still does not tell you that anything is happening.
Am I going to have to do this every time I update?
This sounds like going around the problem not fixing it. Boy I'm getting so sick of windows constant resource consuming bug ridden crap.

Till now I could install updates for Windows without any issue.
But now I can't. It keeps showing downloading but it remains stuck at 0%.
The only thing that has changed is while earlier my PC connected to Internet directly, now it connects it via a TP-Link router. I have no problems accessing Internet; only thing is that I can't update Windows.
Please help me.
