I have windows 7, and for the past few months I am unable to update windows.
Windows update is stuck at downloading 0kb 0% and after viewing all the similar posts around the web regarding this problem I still cant fix it, even after trying everything (stopping and restarting the service, disabling av and firewall, delete softwaredistribute folder and so on...).
Im desperate, please help.

Checked with speedtest. Shows 3.78 Mbps download, 2.8 upload. PC hardware can also be termed as fast: i5 4th generation 4670 3.4 GHz CPU, 8 GB RAM.
Are you sure it's not related to this TP-Link device between my PC and the ISP? I don't know why, but I do think some configuration modification is needed on the PC to be able to download updates...

Till now I could install updates for Windows without any issue.
But now I can't. It keeps showing downloading but it remains stuck at 0%.
The only thing that has changed is while earlier my PC connected to Internet directly, now it connects it via a TP-Link router. I have no problems accessing Internet; only thing is that I can't update Windows.
Please help me.

First thing is to make sure you have internet connectivity by either going to some website or try running speed test from some well known site. I use speedtest.net. If that works then you are in the same boat as a lot of us where Windows is not showing the progress at downloading the updates. Just let it run. I have a fast 64 bit Windows 7 computer with a 200Kbps connection and at times it can take between 6 to 10 hours to update. I just start my updates on the weekend and let it run.

This sounds like going around the problem not fixing it. Boy I'm getting so sick of windows constant resource consuming bug ridden crap.

Here is another tool available from Windows Task Manager:
Resource Monitor
it shows CPU, Disk, Network and Memory utilization.
Even when network is quiet, Windows Update uses CPU and Disk
In services tab of Windows Task Manager find the Windows Update service 'wuauserv',
right click, Go to Process (click on Show processes from all users in Processes tab beforehand). This would give you pid with which you can check CPU, Disk etc in Resource Monitor.
Yes I know that and that is how I found out that the performance degrade was because of Windows Update running. As I pointed out in my original post, CPU running at 50% to 80% (on windows update). While disk activity is practically nill. This is during the "Download" phase of the update not even to the updating part. But that still does not tell you that anything is happening.
