Windows Movie Maker has a black screen (no video, but audio still there)…Please help!!!

Hi,

Now I install Windows 8 Pro and Windows Movie Maker 2012. When I tried to make a video, the preview screen was black and I could only hear the audio (no video).

When in Windows Movie Maker (Windows 8 Pro) I open project file (.wlmp) which have been created by Windows Movie Maker (Windows 7 Ultimate), the preview screen was black and audio also was absent.

Windows 8 Pro Windows Media Player play movie clips from Panasonic SDR-S150 without problems. When I make photo show from Panasonic SDR-S150 photos with Windows Movie Maker (Windows 8 Pro), there aren’t any problems.

In Windows 7 Ultimate I've been using Windows Movie Maker 2012 to make projects from camcorder Panasonic SDR-S150 videos (Movie clips) and then upload them to DVD (Windows DVD Maker). All works OK.

Additional details

In my SkyDrive folder ( *removed for privacy purposes* )  there are 4 files with following information:

-          Jpeg file - Windows 8 Movie Maker open Win7 MovieMaker project - screenshot from program Windows Movie Maker (Windows 8 Pro) when it open project file which was created by Windows 7 Ultimate Windows Movie Maker.

-          Jpeg file - Windows 8 Movie Maker open Panasonic SDR-S150 file – screenshot from program Windows Movie Maker (Windows 8 Pro) when I edit video file MOV002.NOD

-          Movie Clip (MOD) - MOV002 – Movie Clip from camcorder Panasonic SDR-S150

-          Txt file – MOV002-MOD MediaInfo – information about video file MOV002.MOD (from program MediaInfo 0.7.61).

On my computer (Motherboard: MSI Z77A-G43 (System model: MS-7758); Processor: Intel® Core™ i5-3570 CPU @ 3.40GHz; Installed physical memory (RAM): 8 GB; System type: 64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor) two Operating Systems have been installed: first – Windows 7 Ultimate (Version 6.1.7601 Service Pack1 Build 7601) and second - Windows 8 Pro (Version 6.2.9200 Build 9200).

On both OS Windows Movie Maker Version 2012 (Build 16.4.3905.0912) has been installed*.*

From http://downloadcenter.intel.com/ video driver have been updated. System has been checked by DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag) - in all display tabs has been said – “No problems found”. Intel® HD Graphics: Driver version:  9.17.10.2875.

Please help as I need to fix this as soon as possible!

I found out that MM2012 crashed a lot, even while after restoring to project it crashed again.

Finally after having lots of problems, i've selected al videos when they were finally loaded inside MM and I set the Video stabilization to None and the black screens were gone.

There is the source of all evil I guess :-)

    Let me provide a bit of background and hopefully this will help.

    The latest version is Movie Maker 2012 which can be installed on Windows 7 or Windows 8.  Only when it is in Windows 8 will you have the video stabilization option.  So given that you are on Windows 7, that can't be the cause of your problem.

    Movie Maker can accept many video file types as the source input.  When Leonard asked about the types of video files you are using, this is what he was asking for.  The .wlmp is your project file created by Movie Maker.  It's not a video file at all.  Instead it is like the recipe or instructions for building your movie.  It contains a list of the source files (videos, photos, music) along with what transitions/effects you want to apply, captions you want to add, etc.

    You have created a project using certain source files. I'm assuming while you are editing within Movie Maker, you are able to see a preview of your movie?  But when you ask Movie Maker to create your final movie using the instructions in your project file, that final movie file has no video in it, only black?

    There are several things that can cause this.  To help isolate the problem, if you create a project with just photos, then save as a movie, does that movie play correctly?  What about a movie with just one video file and no music? Does that play correctly when saved as a movie?

    The most likely causes of the problem are:

    1. The source files you are using (e.g. videos) are not 100% compatible with Movie Maker.  The quickest fix for this is to convert the file to a known format that Movie Maker likes, preferably .wmv format.  For that, try something like Freemake Video Converter.  If the resulting converted file works, that was the problem.  If it doesn't check #2.
    2. The video graphics drivers you have loaded for your GPU could be out of date.  Run dxdiag and go to the Display tab.  Make a note of the make/model of your graphics card and also the version.  Then go to the manufacturer's website and get an updated driver.

    Good luck and hopefully you'll figure this out soon with the information provided.

    I can not see the pictures or videos when creating my movie. I have just follow both your steps and neither has seemed to solve the problem. Do you have any other suggestions ?

    Hello,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community forum. I understand that you are unable to see the pictures or videos when you creating your movie. I would be happy to help you.  In order to do so, I will need to ask you some questions to better understand the issue.

    • What are the steps that you took in resolving the issue?
    • What is your Movie Maker build version?
    • Does the issue occur before?

    Ensure that you have the latest the version of your Windows Live Movie Maker. Movie Maker 2012's system requirements are slightly different from Movie Maker 2011's. As explained in the Release Notes, Movie Maker 2012 requires video hardware that supports DirectX 10 or higher. Older video hardware that only supports up to DirectX 9 is currently not able to run Movie Maker 2012.

    Ensure also that you have the proper codecs to play your videos and audio files.Audio and Video require codecs to play the file and it’s important to have the right codecs installed or updated in your PC.

    • You may try fixing bad codecs by referring to this link: Microsoft FixIt tool
    • Media info will be able to identify any issues with missing or faulty codecs and whether it’s already installed in your computer or not. Get here.

    Note: If can't find the codec, you may convert the video to a supported format (eg. wmv) and then add it to your Windows Live Movie Maker project.
