Hi,

Now I install Windows 8 Pro and Windows Movie Maker 2012. When I tried to make a video, the preview screen was black and I could only hear the audio (no video).

When in Windows Movie Maker (Windows 8 Pro) I open project file (.wlmp) which have been created by Windows Movie Maker (Windows 7 Ultimate), the preview screen was black and audio also was absent.

Windows 8 Pro Windows Media Player play movie clips from Panasonic SDR-S150 without problems. When I make photo show from Panasonic SDR-S150 photos with Windows Movie Maker (Windows 8 Pro), there aren’t any problems.

In Windows 7 Ultimate I've been using Windows Movie Maker 2012 to make projects from camcorder Panasonic SDR-S150 videos (Movie clips) and then upload them to DVD (Windows DVD Maker). All works OK.

Additional details

In my SkyDrive folder ( *removed for privacy purposes* )  there are 4 files with following information:

-          Jpeg file - Windows 8 Movie Maker open Win7 MovieMaker project - screenshot from program Windows Movie Maker (Windows 8 Pro) when it open project file which was created by Windows 7 Ultimate Windows Movie Maker.

-          Jpeg file - Windows 8 Movie Maker open Panasonic SDR-S150 file – screenshot from program Windows Movie Maker (Windows 8 Pro) when I edit video file MOV002.NOD

-          Movie Clip (MOD) - MOV002 – Movie Clip from camcorder Panasonic SDR-S150

-          Txt file – MOV002-MOD MediaInfo – information about video file MOV002.MOD (from program MediaInfo 0.7.61).

On my computer (Motherboard: MSI Z77A-G43 (System model: MS-7758); Processor: Intel® Core™ i5-3570 CPU @ 3.40GHz; Installed physical memory (RAM): 8 GB; System type: 64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor) two Operating Systems have been installed: first – Windows 7 Ultimate (Version 6.1.7601 Service Pack1 Build 7601) and second - Windows 8 Pro (Version 6.2.9200 Build 9200).

On both OS Windows Movie Maker Version 2012 (Build 16.4.3905.0912) has been installed*.*

From http://downloadcenter.intel.com/ video driver have been updated. System has been checked by DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag) - in all display tabs has been said – “No problems found”. Intel® HD Graphics: Driver version:  9.17.10.2875.

Please help as I need to fix this as soon as possible!

Thanks,

Andrejs

P.S. Sorry for the long description, I thought it would be best to give as much info as possible.

I found out that MM2012 crashed a lot, even while after restoring to project it crashed again.

Finally after having lots of problems, i've selected al videos when they were finally loaded inside MM and I set the Video stabilization to None and the black screens were gone.

There is the source of all evil I guess :-)

Hope this helps anyone

    Hi Andrejs,

It's possible that you don't have the proper codec installed on your computer to play the .MOD format and that's why you only see a black preview screen. To eliminate this symptom, we request that you convert the .MOD video clip to a .WMV format since this is the most compatible file format that you can use in Movie Maker. You may search for any available free converters available  using your preferred search engine. Once this has been done, please let us know the result afterwards.

    Thank you.

Why Windows Movie Maker (Windows 7 Ultimate) work correctly, although there is not installed any codecs, but Windows Movie Maker (Windows 8 Pro) does not work?

    How do I remedy this?

    Thank you in advance

    Hello Andrejs,

As you have mentioned, you are both using Movie Maker 2012 on both Windows 8 Pro and Windows 7 Ultimate. Since your computers have different operating systems, black preview screen can be an issue of insufficient codecs for Windows 8 Pro. Ensure that you have the proper codecs to play your videos and audio files – audio and video require codecs to play the file and it’s important to have the right codecs installed or updated in your PC.

    - Try running the Microsoft FixIt tool for codecs: **FixIT**

    - Media info will be able to identify any issue with missing of faulty codecs and whether it's already in your computer or not: Media Info

Another possibility is because of your video card drivers are not updated. Movie Maker makes extensive use of the video card GPU (graphics processing unit). The display driver affects the reliability, performance, and compatibility of the video card with different software.

To determine the version and video card driver date, run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag):

    DirectX Diagnostic Tool

    1. On your desktop, click Windows button + F on your keyboard.
    2. Click Apps then type dxdiag then hit Ok.
    3. Click on the Display tab and you will see the driver details including the driver version.
    4. If your video card driver seems outdated please go to the video card driver manufacturer and see if a newer version is available.

    Example:

Please let us know the result afterwards.

    Thank you.

Thank you very much for your reply.

It helped me to solve one problem - open the same project both OS (Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows 8 Pro).

But the other problem remain - black preview screen in Windows Movie Maker (Windows 8 Pro).

I conducted the experiment. I started a new project in Windows Movie Maker (Windows 8 Pro) and edit the file MOD002.MOD.  Of course, as usual, there was a normal sound, but the preview screen is still black. I make minimal editing, even though the screen was black. In spite of the fact I save project. This same project I open in Windows Movie Maker (Windows 7 Ultimate). Everything was good – I see video in preview screen and hear sound.

How do I get a video in Windows Movie Maker (Windows 8 Pro) preview screen?

    Andrejs
