Windows Movie Maker has a black screen (no video, but audio still there)…Please help!!!

Thanks for the information you have provided. However, we cannot advise that you use Windows Movie Maker 6.0 in Windows 7 since we did not release any official Windows Movie Maker 6.0 that will work on that operating system. That Movie Maker is for Windows Vista. Since that software came from a third-party site, we cannot guarantee the if any problems arising from the use of that software is fixable.

In case you want to troubleshoot your concern, I suggest that you clean install first Movie Maker to isolate if the issue was really caused by conflict between the softwares. Here's how:

1. Uninstall Windows Essentials using CMD Line Parameter.
2. Delete the Windows Live folders (if any) found on the following directories:

• C:\Program Files\Windows Live
• C:\Program Files\Common Files\Windows Live

3. Download Windows Essentials and install.

MOVIE MAKER 6 MIGHT BE WORTH TRYING.

While generally good advice to have the latest version of software, in this particular case, I've found it not to be true. For probably a year, I've experienced the problem where the preview window in video editing software is a black box. Sound plays fine but no video. This is true For Windows Movie Maker 2011, 2012 as well as Nero v11.  With Nero, the video editing screen displays fine but the preview window does  not. With all three programs, the "published" video file is fine. INITIALLY, THE PREVIEW WINDOW WORKED FINE in Movie Maker 2011 and Nero then one day died. FYI, I'm running Windows 7 (64-bit).

Recently, I installed Windows Movie Maker version 6 (64-bit). The preview window works fine in that software. It continues to be a black box in Movie Maker 2012 and Nero.  (I guess that functionality was somehow built in to that version to somehow function more independently. I can't think of another reason for the different behavior.)

But there is a gotcha: immediately after installing Movie Maker 6, Nero no longer allows me to import audio files when creating a video project. I can't be certain that installing Movie Maker 6 caused the problem but the circumstantial evidence should sway a jury. So, something occurred behind the scenes that wasn't good; what might happen for other users I have no idea. Not a technical issue but it's worth noting: there are significant changes between Movie Maker 6 and subsequent versions (some differences might be considered better depending on how you want to use the software). 

I've tried FixIt, DXDiag, reinstalling software, reinstalling codecs and aother suggested solutions. I believe my problem was triggered by conflicts when installing different software that are related to video editing. While I'm just a civillian and no expert, my hunch is that the areas to explore are codecs and also FFShow (even though diagnostics would seem to indicate no problems there). Given the behavior in Nero (video editing display, video previewing does not, video generated is fine), it seems those with technical expertise in this area would find that to be a significant clue.

Thanks for posting here. If you are using Windows Movie Maker 6.0, please be informed that Video Stabilization feature is only available on the latest version of Movie Maker and you should be using Windows 8. For more information, you can review the release notes for Movie Maker **here**.
