Windows Movie Maker has a black screen (no video, but audio still there)…Please help!!!

I first used Moviemaker to edit my videos in Vista, I didn't have any problems but when I switched to windows 8 I found out that there's something wrong with Moviemaker. It doesn't support MOD files I'm not very familiar with formats, codecs and other softwares. I'm very confused why can't Moviemaker display the video, I can only hear the audio. I have already tried many things upon reading this forum. I already have codecs pack on my computer, videos play well on Windows Media Player. I even tried converting the files to wmv but it got worse. The files got corrupted. I also changed the video stabilization to none. Nothing worked. I wish I still had moviemaker for vista. It's so frustrating, I've been trying for many hours now.

Thanks for participating in this thread. It seems that you're also having the same issue with Movie Maker as with the other users here.

We appreciate that you have tried to check if your video drivers are updated via the Control Panel however, to properly determine the version and video card driver date, we request you to run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag). Please follow the steps below:

1. Click on Start button and type dxdiag in the Search programs and files box and press Enter key on the keyboard.
2. Click on the Display tab and you will see the driver details including the driver version.
3. If your video card driver seems outdated, please go to the video card driver manufacturer and see if a newer version is available.

Please note that Movie Maker makes extensive use of the video card GPU (graphics processing unit). The display driver affects the reliability, performance, and compatibility of the video card with various software.

I have had the same problem and they kept telling me to update my graphics driver and that was not the problem.  They kept telling me here that my driver was not up to date even after I sent them all my files.  The windows movie maker worked fine in the 2011 version but the 2012 no matter what I tried had no picture only audio.  I tried for weeks to try different updates for drivers and always it would be this is not for your computer or you are up to date.  So don't let them drive you nuts with this like it did me for weeks.  I finally found it had something to do with computers that had switchable graphics.  That is the problem and the microsoft community here that has over 106 post needs to realize this.  When I switched my graphics which I had to google all over the place for my Hp ProBook Windows 7 computer and finally found out how to activate the switched graphics and then guess what..... I did have the correct driver it just didn't show until I activated and yes tada, success the MM2012 finally worked. 

Only problem for me was my computer now ran so hot with this graphics switched I was afraid my hard drive would burn out from the heat.  So I switched it back to regular graphics which then makes it look like once again the drivers are not up to date.  But they are.  And no longer had picture again in MM2012.  Got sick of dealing with it, switched back to 2011, watched many posts on this forum since then saying the same thing..... "Windows 7 MM2012 no picture but sound and same thing said.... Your drivers are not up to date"  NOW maybe for some that has been the solution, I just wonder how many have had switchable graphics and gave up because it kept saying they were up to date and still wouldn't work.   I have made many movies since then in MM 2011 until today after updates to Net Framework 4 all of a sudden My MM 2011 has no picture.  OMG I was like no now what.  I just loaded MM2012 and YAHOO I have images now and sound.  So apparently they may be finally fixing this but now the 2011 is no good and I can't finish those movies started in 2011 because not compatible in 2012.    ggrrrrr I am happy this this one is working Just hard to take so much time to switch back and forth to finish up the other movies.  We will see.  But just wanted to post this at the end of this feed on someone who may have the same issues I had with this and to many others..... I hope this helps.

I'm having the same problem. Movie Maker 12 worked fine until a few months ago. I assumed it was because of some automatic Windows update. 

The videos and movies no longer play the video part only the Audio.

I tried going through the Control Panel to update the driver and I am told that my driver is up-to-date.
