I have an LG slim portable dvd writer and player...DVD's won't play on my asus and I can't use windows media as my default program.

Hi,

I'm thinking you're talking about an actual DVD movie, not a mpg or wmv video files on the disk....

If that is the case, WMP 12 in Win 8 will not play DVD movie disks or files due to licensing reasons.

You're options would be to activate Media Center, or use a 3rd party player....

VLC and Media Player Classic are two popular free programs...

    I'm not exactly sure what that means..

    but I have the VLC (it has an orange cone as its logo) and whenever I open that program it says I have no disc but it acknowledges that there is something in the USB port like it knows that the DVD player is there

    I'm sorry if thats not helpful

    What happens if you open VLC, click on the MEDIA Tab, and select "Open Disk" ?

    it says to insert a disc in the drive

    and then I do and it still doesn't recognize it
