I have an LG slim portable dvd writer and player...DVD's won't play on my asus and I can't use windows media as my default program.

I'm thinking you're talking about an actual DVD movie, not a mpg or wmv video files on the disk....
If that is the case, WMP 12 in Win 8 will not play DVD movie disks or files due to licensing reasons.
You're options would be to activate Media Center, or use a 3rd party player....
VLC and Media Player Classic are two popular free programs...
just to be sure, uninstall vlc and reinstall in case it is an installation problem. Restart your computer. Try to play a cd and see if it works. Support would want you to try this first while they have you on the phone so it will be quicker if you do this first. LG phone support is free and they will be able to tell you if there is a problem with the burner.
I have an HP Envy running Windows 10, and encountered the SAME problem. Fortunately, I was able to solve this one by installing Power DVD 11, using the LG drive, ON TOP of the newer version that disallows the playing of DVDs. When I put in a DVD to play, it WORKED immediately. There was no conflict between the programs.

It feels as if we are proceeding BACKWARDS technologically. I can't believe how we are being monitored and bilked by the system, and what used to be simple is now impossible!

I have the same issue. Does it matter whether you have the VLC program, or the app from the store?

In my case it didn't matter because it wasn't a computer issue. It was the dvd writer died. I went through the steps of uninstalling VLC and reinstalling and attempting to force open but when I called LG they walked me through the steps again and checked my warranty which was still in effect and I got a new one- no more problems. If you have tried the other steps given in this thread, call LG- they will let you know what is wrong. I was lucky, my 1yr warranty was almost up
