I have an LG slim portable dvd writer and player...DVD's won't play on my asus and I can't use windows media as my default program.

I'm thinking you're talking about an actual DVD movie, not a mpg or wmv video files on the disk....
If that is the case, WMP 12 in Win 8 will not play DVD movie disks or files due to licensing reasons.
You're options would be to activate Media Center, or use a 3rd party player....
VLC and Media Player Classic are two popular free programs...

If you put a disk in your drive and wait for the light to quit blinking, then open Media Player Classic, and click on "File"... you should see a selection for "Open Disk"...
Your drive should appear, along with the name of the actual disk...
BTW... is this a Toshiba Machine, or do you have iTunes installed ?
Does the drive appear in COMPUTER ?
After failing to be able to play a DVD movie with my LG and reading all these comments, I installed the VCL app. When I open the app, it shows the movie in my external player. It won't play it and says that it finds nothing there. Isn't there some way to get this dang thing to work?
You should call LG support, the number is online. they will walk you through some steps to check. I did this and thankfully mine was still under warranty. A sticker covered some info and said not to remove so I contacted the ebay seller and they quickly replaced it. The dealer handles their own warrantied items.
