I have an LG slim portable dvd writer and player...DVD's won't play on my asus and I can't use windows media as my default program.

Hi,

I'm thinking you're talking about an actual DVD movie, not a mpg or wmv video files on the disk....

If that is the case, WMP 12 in Win 8 will not play DVD movie disks or files due to licensing reasons.

You're options would be to activate Media Center, or use a 3rd party player....

VLC and Media Player Classic are two popular free programs...

    Hi,

    Try going to Control Panel and set the VIEW to Small Icons...

    Click on "AutoPlay", and browse down the list to "DVD Movie"...

    Try to select VLC from the menu and see if that helps...
