I have an LG slim portable dvd writer and player...DVD's won't play on my asus and I can't use windows media as my default program.

I'm thinking you're talking about an actual DVD movie, not a mpg or wmv video files on the disk....
If that is the case, WMP 12 in Win 8 will not play DVD movie disks or files due to licensing reasons.
You're options would be to activate Media Center, or use a 3rd party player....
VLC and Media Player Classic are two popular free programs...
Sure, I called LG support and they walked me through it. we reinstalled the software and also reinstalled the vlc media player and checked a couple dvd's and cd's. It was seeing the cd but not the dvd. In the end he asked for the info on the back of the unit. Since mine had a sticker that said don't remove that was covering numbers, he said to contact the seller because they were handling the warranties directly. Vlc media player can install incorrectly so that is why he had me check both cd and dvd. I was able to pull up the ebay sale in my purchase history and contact the seller who had me send back the old one and as soon as they got it, they sent a new one out. Since it was broken, I didn't worry about packing and just used an envelope and did not send the cord. the shipping was cheap and the seller stood behind the sale. overall a good experience.
I was so frustrated with this problem. Best Buy finally figured out I needed the VLC program to use the portable LG DVD player with my Asus Windows 8.1 Tablet. All seems to be working, but the VLC program doesn't play the entire Nature and Music DVD's I've been using. It stops after the third or 4th "song". Then it crashes!
It just amazes me that my tablet won't work with the portable drive and Windows Media player! I'm sticking to my laptop-- less frustration!

I know nothing about Zeal... It may have a problem of some kind, or possibly a setting somewhere causing problems...
After trying numerous players, I've pretty much determined VLC is as good as you're going to get....
It may not be the actual BEST, but I would think that if it's not, it's a very close 2nd.

You might try VLC Media Player... it's free...
I don't know why the disk doesn't show.... Does Zeal recognize the actual drive ?
