After installation of update KB2670838 Win 7 keeps crashing to blue screen.

I currently have laptop set to automatic download and installation of windows updates. Update KB2670838 causes system crash whenever Internet Explorer Version 9 is running. I restored the laptop to a previous date using system restore and again allowed the update to install again. Getting the same results as previous installation of the update. I uninstalled the update using Add/Remove programs and laptop seems stable.

I have Win 7 Pro 64 bit edition Serv pack 1 on HP DV7 laptop I7 processor and 16GB ram.

And therein lies the rub, my friend.

Allow me to quote the OP in this thread...

IOW, it would appear that Automatic Updates is downloading/installing KB2670838 (at least as long as AU's set to the default Automatic setting).

AU's set to Notify Only here so I was able to hide it before AU offered it.

[PS: Running Fix It 50202 in Aggressive mode will "flush" the Download folder.]

    Can you tell us when (exact date, preferably) KB2670838 was "re-classified" as an Optional update?

    Not official but on AskWoody.com (http://www.askwoody.com/2013/kb-2670838-platform-update-crashing-systems/) a 3/2/13 post says: 'Commenter FTWMike noted, “I find it interesting that yesterday “Platform Update for Windows 7 x64-Edition (KB2670838)” was listed as an ‘Important’ and today it’s ‘Optional’ or did I imagine yesterday?”'

     

     

    FTWMike's post is the best indication I have for a cut-over date. It appears as if the patch went out Tuesday, the alarm went up Thursday (first post in this thread) and the patch was turned to optional on Thursday.     KB894199 strongly suggests that KB2670838 was "pulled" (i.e., no longer offered via AU) on Wednesday, the 27th.

    That being said, why hasn't Dan or any other BlueBadger answered the question?  So much for the "trustworthy computing" initiative...

    FYI: I was able to get the most recent graphics drivers for the HP dv6-6190us installed. I then reinstalled KB2670838 and have been running for about 20 hours with no BSOD.

    Note that these drivers are old (2011) and not the most recent from Intel or AMD, but the most recent offered by HP.
