After installation of update KB2670838 Win 7 keeps crashing to blue screen.

I currently have laptop set to automatic download and installation of windows updates. Update KB2670838 causes system crash whenever Internet Explorer Version 9 is running. I restored the laptop to a previous date using system restore and again allowed the update to install again. Getting the same results as previous installation of the update. I uninstalled the update using Add/Remove programs and laptop seems stable.

I have Win 7 Pro 64 bit edition Serv pack 1 on HP DV7 laptop I7 processor and 16GB ram.

And therein lies the rub, my friend.

Allow me to quote the OP in this thread...

IOW, it would appear that Automatic Updates is downloading/installing KB2670838 (at least as long as AU's set to the default Automatic setting).

AU's set to Notify Only here so I was able to hide it before AU offered it.

[PS: Running Fix It 50202 in Aggressive mode will "flush" the Download folder.]

    I have Compaq CQ61 with AMD Mobility 4200 graphics, latest Catalyst 13.1 drivers. After this update I began getting blocks on the screen with very blurry type that cleared up after a screen refresh. Uninstalling the update now.

    The microcode update (KB2818604) is unrelated to Platform Update for Windows 7/ Internet Explorer 10 and the symptoms "Newstech" cites. The microcode update addresses an issue with certain AMD CPU models on Windows 8, not Windows 7.

    This topic regarding Platform Update for Windows 7 (KB2670838) is a specific compatibility issue with certain GPUs, on mobile hybrid/switchable graphics solutions with particular driver versions. Microsoft is actively working to address this issue for customers.

    I saw an earlier comment in the thread that this issue was happening on non mobile hybrid/switchable graphics solutions. Can folks who are hitting this issue or other graphics issues specifically related to Platform Update (KB2670838) who do NOT have mobile hybrid/switchable graphics systems please post dxdiag.exe logs? Run dxdiag.exe and then click "save all info". The key sections from the dxdiag log file are "System Information", "Display Devices", and "System Devices".

    Thanks for your post, Don [sic]. Glad to see we could finally get a reply from a BlueBadger (even if I had to resort to using scare tactics <w>).

    PS: Assuming you concur with Wuzzle(2)'s post above...

    Microsoft is aware of an issue some customers are experiencing when installing KB2670838 on certain laptop systems with hybrid graphics. We are looking into the situation and are considering blocking the update for systems that could be affected. Customers who are experiencing issues on systems that already have installed the update should consider uninstalling KB2670838.

    ...would you like to tell those who uninstall KB2670838 how to stop Automatic Updates from installing it again?
