After installation of update KB2670838 Win 7 keeps crashing to blue screen.

I currently have laptop set to automatic download and installation of windows updates. Update KB2670838 causes system crash whenever Internet Explorer Version 9 is running. I restored the laptop to a previous date using system restore and again allowed the update to install again. Getting the same results as previous installation of the update. I uninstalled the update using Add/Remove programs and laptop seems stable.

I have Win 7 Pro 64 bit edition Serv pack 1 on HP DV7 laptop I7 processor and 16GB ram.

And therein lies the rub, my friend.

Allow me to quote the OP in this thread...

IOW, it would appear that Automatic Updates is downloading/installing KB2670838 (at least as long as AU's set to the default Automatic setting).

AU's set to Notify Only here so I was able to hide it before AU offered it.

[PS: Running Fix It 50202 in Aggressive mode will "flush" the Download folder.]

Will installing the update KB2929755 resolve this issue. Can any one confirm this.

When you load some image resources in an application such as Microsoft Visual Studio on a computer that has Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008 R2 installed, the application stops responding and memory leaks in Windows. Yes, because KB2670838 is one of the many Prerequisite Updates for IE10 and IE11; cf. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2847882

If you uninstall ANY of the Prerequisite Updates, the previous IE version will be 'automagically' restored.

If & when you upgrade to Win8.1, the fixes in KB2670838 and all other Prerequisite Updates (and many, many more) are included. See http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/upgrade-from-windows-7-tutorial

PS: If your Win7 hardware cannot support Platform Update KB2670838, chances are you won't be able to run Win8.1 either.

After uninstalling KB2670838 Internet Explorer downgrades to version 9. When rechecking for new Windows Updates, there is no KB2670838 to hide, but only Internet Explorer 10 and Internet Explorer 11. If one of those is installed, KB2670838 automatically is re-installed as well. So, I guess the only solution at this moment is hiding Internet Explorer 10 and Internet Explorer 11 from being updated.

This is quite unpleasant.

Question:

If we purchase Windows 8.1 and install it instead of Windows 7, will this help to forget about this issue or must we be aware of not being able to "solve" this problem anymore, as it'll not be possible to downgrade to Internet Explorer 9?
